Immigration - UK to Australia - Between 1901 & 1930
« on: Monday 18 July 11 11:09 BST (UK) »
I am stuck!

I am looking for William (B1865) and Hannah (B1865) KENNA who migrated from Englend (Cheshire?) to Australia (NSW?) somewhere between 1901 and 1904. They may have had about 5 children with them.

Would also love any hints on the dates of their deaths.

Tell me again why I want to trace my family tree...... :-\

Welcome to Rootschat, Libby.   :)

Can you give us any more details? Such as names of children? Or names of William and Hanna's parents?

Ah - this in itself is a bit of a mystery. If I have my ancestry.com.au research correct, children are;

* Hannah (B1888 - Cheshire, England)
* William Hy (B1889 - Cheshire, England)
* Margaret (B1890 - Cheshire, England)
* George (B1892 - Cheshire, England)
* Elsie (B1893 - Cheshire, England)
* Rupert V (B1904 - Mosman, NSW)
* Gladys A (B1906 - Mosman, NSW)
* Albert E (B1907 - Orange, NSW)

Whilst I know it's possible that all of those children were born across three towns, two continents and almost 20 years, it doesn't seem all that likely.

Hence my befuddlement!

Thanks for trying to help Dee.

Welcome to Rootschat.

They didn't emigrate before 1911 (if at all) as I have them on the 1901 & 1911 census.
I've checked the Passenger Lists after 1911 and can't see them anywhere.
What makes you think they went to Australia?.

As we can't post 1911 census details here, I'll send you a PM.

Mike

Hi Mike,

I have them both being born in the UK and have seen them (I think) on UK census' in 1886 (Toxteth Park, Liverpool) and 1901 (Sutton, Cheshire).  The next 'sighting' is in Nths Sydney in 1930.  See also birth dates and locations of children in my second most (@ 11:33:50).

There isn't a census in 1886?

However, on the 1881 census, the William in Toxteth Park the son of William & Lavinia (both born Isle of Man), and he is a Blacksmith, also born Isle of Man.

The William mentioned in previous posts can be found in Seacombe, Birkenhead with his step-father John Palling, and his mother Ann Palling.

Now we just need to work out which William is yours! ;D

Seeing this all before me makes me wonder if the real question is "do I have the right great grandparents (Hannah and William)".

My grandfather is Rupert Vincent KENNA (B1904 Mosman, NSW, Australia) and as I said, it seems strange to me that so many children were born across so many years in so many towns.... not impossible, but strange.
