James Canavan - Birth
« on: Monday 18 July 11 01:19 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Can anyone please help.

I am trying to locate a birth in Ireland for a James Christopher Loos Canavan.

His date of Birth date was December 1914  and the general birth place of "republic of Ireland"

His father was John Patrick Canavan.

I have checked Roots Ireland but no luck.

Any help would be appreciated.  To establish a mothers name and county of birth would be great.

Many thanks

Tilsley

The RootsIreland/IFHF website has very few record after 1900, so you would be better searching civil records for James birth.

Do you have a marriage record for James ?
A cert would show his father's occupation and might help you locate him on the 1911 census ...

Hi,
This may be a red herring but civil records has a James Christopher Canavan born Jan- Mar 1916 and registered in Kilkenny Vol 3 Page 397.

Hi All,

Thanks for your help.

Shanew147 - this is his marriage,  lists his father as John Patrick Canavan

Kingskerwell - that throws up more questions.  His death certificate clearly states his birth as December 1914 but his age on his marriage certificate makes it 1916.  I wonder if they registered the death a year out?  December 1915 registered Q1 1916?

Do the civil records indicate any mothers maiden name or any other info?

I think his parents are John Patrick Canavan & Margaret Moore.  They married in Woolwich London, 1912,  im getting this as James had a sister Josephine,  their is a birth of Josephine Canavan 1913 Woolwich - to mothers maiden name Moore?

Just need to link James Christopher Loos into this?

Cheers

Civil birth records include mother's maiden name - see :

Details included on a Birth Cert

Record in BMD Index dont always include middle names, so you may have to check births recorded as James Canavan.

Its not unusual for the year of birth or age to be inaccurate on death records..

Tilsley,

It seems likely that James Christopher Loos' father was a soldier for why else would he bear the name of Loos? (Battle of Loos, Belgium Sept 1915)

And the fact that his father married in Woolwich also points to the military - it being the home of the artillery regiments. If his father was a serving soldier in WW1 there should be a medal card for him on the National Archives site - and maybe even his service documents which may give more info about his background and place of birth.

Hi,

My first thought was military but the birth date on the death certificate was dec 1914 before the battle of loos.

I think the birth record registered in Q1 1916 is looking more likely and that the date on the birth date on the death certificate is incorrect.
