Joseph Anderson, Cricketer
« on: Sunday 17 July 11 23:21 BST (UK) »
I'm told that Joseph Anderson, who played cricket for Scotland in the very early 1900s was probably related to my ancestors, but I've not yet been able to make a direct link yet.

My ancestors were -

Marion Anderson b. 1863, Balchine, Fife, (m James Ramage) whose father was -

James Anderson, b. 1832, Carnock, Fife, (m Marion Simpson) whose father (I think) was -

William Anderson, b. 1800, Tulliallan, Perth, (m Margaret Hogg) whose father (I think) was William Anderson (ploughman I think, from Perthshire, m Christian Tod)

As far as I can identify, Joseph Anderson was born in Perth in 1878, and his father was William Anderson b. abt 1851. Joseph I think ran a sports shop.

Any further information on Joseph Anderson the cricketer would be very welcome, and of course if any link can be identified to any of the above persons.

Thanks
 :)

Hi David

I am not connected to this line, but thought that this might be an entry for Joseph's father William on the 1851 census - everyone born in Perth except mother Margaret:

Joseph Anderson 35, Journeyman Shoemaker
Margaret Anderson 36 b. Redgorton, Perthshire
Mary Anderson 7
Janet Anderson 5
William Anderson under 1 Year

Address: Stormont Street, Perth

Hi All

there was an Anderson's sports shop in Perth.

I think the daughter of one of the family was a famous woman golfer.

I am working from memory and the shop was known as Joe Anderson it was in St Johns street just off the High street opposite what was then the Clydesdale bank.

There's minimal information here on his cricinfo profile - http://www.espncricinfo.com/scotland/content/player/25140.html

If I can find any more info, I will of course post it.

Thanks very much for the replies and the additional information about Joe. I'll hopefully eventually get the link into my own tree.

Hi

Joe Anderson the cricketer was born at 17 Stormont Street, Perth on 31 Jan 1878.  His father was William Anderson a Coach Trimmer and his mother was Margaret Lennox.  They were married at Scone on 31 Dec 1874.

Joe was a renowned golfer as well as a cricketer and his sports shop in Perth was still operating under his name into the 1980's.

I hope this might be helpful.

Hi,

Thanks very much for the latest reply - the further information is much appreciated, though I still don't quite yet have the reputed link to my Fife Andersons!

Best Wishes
David

Hi David

I'd say if you are linked it must be quite far back looking at your original post.  If you do find you're related and want any more information on Joe, please let me know.  I've got quite a lot on him as a cricketer and even have a few copies of the Scottish Cricket Annual which he produced before WWI.  I'm not related to him in any way although I did once buy some kit from his sports shop in Perth but that was well after his death, I think.

Good hunting.

Richard
