Primitive Methodist Church, Queen Street
« on: Tuesday 12 July 11 21:05 BST (UK) »
Does any one know of the history of the Primitive Methodist Church that used to be in Queen Street? I think it is a Building Society now but the lovely stained glass window is still there. My grandparents married there in 1923

Hi Julia,

Would you like to tell us where in Berkshire this church is located?  I know there is a Queen Street in Maidenhead, but there may be others.  I don't recall a building society on Maidenhead's Queen Street.  :-\

Sorry I'm new to this!!  ::) Yes it was on Queen Street, Maidenheaad but I maybe wrong about what's there now - could be an estate agent. I took a picture of the church window, which is on the first floor, last year and the building has 'surveys' on the ground floor window & a part web address - www atk. Sorry I don't know the road names but the building is on the corner, or near the corner, of the road that comes down from the main car park, crossing Queen Street and going towards the Town Hall. If you turn left into Queen Street (not sure you're allowed!) it's on the right. I think it was actually a chapel though, not church.  :)

I suspect you must be referring to the former Trustees Savings Bank, now occupied by Atkinsons. Walker's History Of Maidenhead records that "The removal to Queen Street took place in 1882, when a new chapel was erected there at a cost of £1511, and with a seating capacity of 230".

Ah, just goes to show that I have been keeping my eyes at ground floor level rather than higher  ;)

The building of which you speak is now an estate agents, situated on the north-east corner of Queen Street and Broadway.  The building is shown on this photo on the right with the round curve to the doorway:

A more contemporary photo here:

Can I suggest that you contact Maidenhead Heritage Centre who may well be able to help you with a more detailed history.  They are just round the corner from this building.
