Details on South Dublin Union

Hi Shane,
Have been posting on the Dublin ie Forums concerning the South Dublin Union. Your name came up in a reply, saying you know alot about the Union. I have been corresponding with you concerning Murtagh/McInerney in Longford, I wonder if you can advise the best way to get the details of my Grandmother's admission and death in the Union. Her name was Mary Ellen McInerney or possibly Murtagh( nee Wilson). I believe she may have been admitted or died around August 1924, that was the date my father went into Carriglea. Edward my Grandfather  lived at 103, Lower Gardiner Street Dublin at this time.

I will be coming over to Dublin later this year to further my research, so could I possibly get the information before I go, or do I have to make an appointment at the Archives where I think the records are held?

Records for the South Dublin Union are available in the National Archives, Bishop Street. I'm not sure what dates the volumes they hold cover, so it's probably worth contacting them to check. The admission books may not give you very much detail... some of the details I've looked at just showed name, a previous address if known and date the person left the workhouse or died

A death in the workhouse, infirmary or asylum or would be recorded in the usual civil records.

There's a few possible deaths the BMD Index for the name in the district, around  the right time - the first one as McInerney roughly fits the year birth for your Mary Ellen :

a few Murtagh possibilities also.. the third one on this list is closest in age to your Mary Ellen :  Mary Ellen Murtagh, deaths, South Dublin, 1919-1929

I think the death record shown for Mary McInerney Dublin South 1924, could be the one. Would I  get a copy of the death record from GRO Dublin? I presume that her burial would have possibly been a pauper's burial, would there be a certain graveyard used?Paricia

Burials are not easy to find, since most RC registers dont include them. Burial details for Glasnevin/Prospect and Goldenbridge are included on their pay-website.. see the notes in Dublin resources for links to these and other graveyards in Dublin. I dont know if the SDU used a specific cemetery at that time
