ASKEW of Norfolk

I have been researching my mother's side of the family from London back to Norfolk, but have hit the proverbial 'wall'. 

I have a James Askew b.1801 West Acre d.1872 Mitford, m. 02.09.1827 Eliza Aldis in Syderstone.

His siblings are Robert b.1809; Jonathan b.1795, Anne LPhillis b.1792 all West Acre.

Their parents were Robert and Mary Jarvis m. 01.07.1789 in Little Fransham.

Has anyone out there any information they may feel will help me knock down the wall and progress even further back, or sideways.  The Aldis name is carried down in the family for sometime as a second Christian name.

You don't exactly say what your 'wall' is - is it just the Aldis line?

If so, on one of the census Eliza's birthplace is quite specific - Norwich St. Martins.

FreeReg shows:

Eliza Aldis b.17/7/1807, bp.2/8/1807 St. Martin at Oak, Norwich, dau. of Francis Aldis and Eliz. Tripp - Eliza was a twin.

Daniel Aldis                  ditto

At least 2 other siblings:

Edward b.24/2/1809, bp.12/3/1809 St Martin at Oak (FreeReg)

and from an online tree:

Horatio b.14/2/1796 (no details given)

Francis Aldis bc.1766 bur.11/11/1834 (place not given)

A submitted entry on IGI shows a Francis Aldis bp.18/9/1766 Aslacton, Norfolk, son of
Daniel and Mary which would seem likely as he named a son Daniel.

Francis Aldis married Elizabeth Trip/p 25/3/1792 St. Giles, Norwich.

On-line tree states Daniel Aldis married Mary Dix 26/11/1761 Tivetshall St. Margaret, Norfolk and that Francis was the eldest of many children.

On-line tree and IGI point to Robert Askew being born Little Dunham, Norfolk and if that's correct:

Robert Askew, bp.10/11/1762 Little Dunham, Norfolk son of Robert and Sarah (FreeReg).

However, as Robert married Mary Jarvis in Little Fransham I would have thought he's more likely to be:

Robert bp.30/5/1762 Little Fransham, son of John and Ann.

Thank you for the info - it was mainly the Askew family that was 'the wall' as I googled the name Aldis and a very useful website 'family tree' appeared which I am still working my way through.  Like many names that evolve it started at Aldous and goes back to the 16th century. 

I am delighted to have a Horatio in the family - goes very nicely with the Louis Napoleon who was married to an Aunt!!!

Hi, a bit late in replying, but only just found this correspondence on the web.  My gg grandad was James Askew On my mum`s side).    I too found Horatio Aldis fascinating and am in the process of sorting out his son`s life in the States.   Horatio was of course Eliza`s brother (Eliza being the wife of James Askew.)

I would be most interested in any information you find on either Aldis or Askew.  Are you located in East Anglia for easy access to local information or do you like me have to trawl the web in the hope of catching useful bites.

I`m up North so have to rely on the web.  My mum`s line is via Charles Aldis Askew (one of James`s sons who ended up in London - Pancras).

My grandfather with Walter Sidney Askew who lived just off (Royal) Holloway Road in a little street known to me as Randolph Alley - he was a shopkeeper who died 1945.  He had five sons and three daughters.  Do they appear on your tree anywhere?

Yes - all present.   His wife was Eleanor.
My grandad was his brother Alfred Aldis Askew died 1959.
