Wigan Music Hall
« on: Monday 11 July 11 11:37 BST (UK) »
On the 1901 Census at 19 Darlington Street, Wigan are ERNEST and CARMAN GIBBINS.
They are both recorded as Music Hall Artists (Vocalists)
Can anyone shed any light on this pair or their Music Hall work as I think they may be my long lost relatives

How many Music Halls were there in the area and are there any records from them anywhere that may show them there in 1901 ?
CHAINEY - Sussex
HILLIER - Hampshire
Hudson - Yorkshire
Middleton-McIntosh-Sutherland-Yule-Main-Watson-Paul-Russell - North East Scotland

I haven't checked, but the street directories on www.wiganworld.co.uk are likely to show places of entertainment.

I'm pretty sure there is an archive of Music Hall somewhere, with collections of posters etc. Can't remember link at present.

There are likely to be ads in the local papers to drum up custom. Wigan Archives have these on microfilm.

My own entertainment connections to Wigan are when the circus came to town in 1891. One of my distant cousins is a lodger in the town centre. His occupation was "Equestrian". A visitor on census night was John Frisco, a clown.
Looking at ALSTON in south Ribble area, ALSTEAD and DONBAVAND/DUNBABIN etc. everywhere, HOWCROFT and MARSH in Bolton and Westhoughton, PICKERING in the Whitehaven area.

Was there a Music Hall at the end of Wigan Pier?

Apologies  for introducing  a  humourous  note.   But I did once live in Wigan.

Only if the coal heavers loading barges decided to sing as they worked!  It was strictly a coal jetty.

Try this site www.wiganshades.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/wigan_entertainment.htm .Hubby says it would have been the Hippodrome.
