checking details of baptismal entry
« on: Sunday 10 July 11 22:19 BST (UK) »
Hello everyone,

I have been researching my late father's family from Abbey Street Cavan Town. I have obtained copies of Baptismal Records for most of them, by paying Roots Ireland for them, which I do not mind,I have photo copies of Birth Entries also.I have found a difference on the Birth Record and Baptismal Record for my Aunt, I have contacted Cavan Genealogy to ask if they could check the Baptismal  entry for me as the mother's name is differrent to the Birth Entry. They have sent a curt reply back to me stating it will cost Euro 25 for them to check this, even though I have already spent over Euro 120 with them.I do not mind paying for any of my research as I live in the UK. but I think the amount they want to charge is excessive.

Could anyone advise me if I can obtain this information from any other source, This was in 1905 and was shown as Cavan District, I have been told that the RC Chapel near Abbey street was taken down, and I think this is where the baptism took place , as my Grandparents marriage record, shows them as being married in 1902 at Cavan Chapel.

I would be grateful for any help.
Many thanks.
Patricia.

You can either go to or write to the:
Registry Office,
Cavan Hospital
Cavan, Republic of Ireland

Give them the date/homeplace/name of the child.
Ask for a photocopy of the original birth record.
There is a fee for this, but it is nominal.  It was about one pound before the euro came in.
You can also ask for a certified copy of the birth record, but that is not the best choice.  It is newly made and transcription errors are sometimes a problem; also, it costs many times more.  A copy of the original record is much preferred to anything else.

.Hi,
Thanks very much for the info, I have a photocopy of the Birth Entry from the Register, I obtained this from Cavan Registration Office in Cavan. The dates on the entry are different from the Baptism Record I purchased from Roots Ireland. The Birth Entry is shown as April, birth registered July 1905. The Baptism Record is March 1905 and shows the mother as also being the sponsor. also a different surname for the child has been used.

I know that Baptismal Records can show different dates  to the birth, so possibly this has happened, when the birth was registered.

I know this is the correct record as this was my late father's  eldest sister, they also used the name Murtagh and McInerney,

What I would like checking is the Baptismal Entry not the birth, Would the address you gave be able to check this?

Many Thanks.
Patricia.

The Registry Office will only have the civil record, to check the baptismal entry you'll probably need to contact the church.

Thanks for the reply, I have been told that the church is no longer there, it used to be the Cavan Chapel, but my understanding is that this was removed , and the new chapel was not completed until the 1940's, so I do not know if the new church would hold the records for 1905.

If you mean that the currect chapel was rebuilt on the site of the old one then they likely have any existing records from the previous building.

Hi,
Yes I think the chapel was probably re built on the same site, but not 100% sure.

I have e-mailed the Secretary at the church, so will wait for any feedback.

Thanks,
Patricia.

Thanks for the information, i did e-mail the diocesan in Cavan, most of the records are held by Roots Ireland who I obtained records from, they are quite prepared to take your money, but when you want to check the details from their record, they want to charge 25 ero's. We will be coming over from the UK to ireland later this year, so will go into Cavan genealogy at Cavan.

Regards,Patricia.
