Hello and welcome to rootschat
Can you tell us a bit more about Jane?    Have you found her on a census?   What children did they have?   I cannot see her marriage on freebmd.  Could it have been in Scotland?
Regards
Andrea

HO107 2421 57 34 is the 1851 census reference.  Their children then are William age 3 and Ann age 1 month.
By 1861 they also have Thomas age 7 and Richard age 5.

The 1861 census (RG9/3883 folio 28 page 17) has William as born Spittal.

There is a baptism in Spittal Presbyterian for a William Trotter, born 19 May 1823, baptised 30 May 1823 son of William and Sarah Trotter of Spittal

You seem to have found the same info as me. I would like to find out who her parents were as there were 3 Shell brothers on the island and I have been unable to find her marriage to William Trotter, as their first child William was born in 1848 it would have been mid 1840's to 1848

How do you know her name is Shell?    Is this from a child's birth certificate?   Is it possible she was widowed and then married William so under a different surname?   She was quite old to be marrying and having a first child in 1848.

Andrea--if Jane was born 1823--that only makes her 25 for her first child in 1848--I was 30!!!

I am just clutching at straws but they did often marry earlier then!
