Have been to Linthorpe Cemetery with Madpants this morning.  Unfortunately there wasn't a headstone for your gt.grandad, but I took some photos of the area so you can see where he is at rest.

this probably sounds like a really stupid question to someone who knows the area, but is the Acklam Rd cemetery an extension of Linthorpe cemetery?  Can you walk between the two?


I'm asking because the NBI has thrown up a couple of names of rellies buried at Linthorpe (this is late 19th/early 20th century).  I doubt they ever had headstones but one day I'll find out where they are.

I also know I have some 20th century rellies buried somewhere around there...   I remember walking along Acklam Rd to see my gt grandfather's grave when I was very small (this would have been early 1960's...  he died in 1935)  I haven't been back to M'bro since the 1970's & doubt I could find it now.
 
I've emailed M'bro to get my gt grandfather's grave number & hope to visit sometime in the next couple of weeks.  I'd like to see where the older graves are too, if its not going to be too much for one day (200 mile round trip, and I'm hoping to get to the archives too)

Welcome to Rootschat 

The eastern end of Linthorpe cemetery is bounded by the northern end of Acklam Road, if that helps, not to be confused with Acklam Cemetery which is at the southern end of Acklam Road.
The two cemeteries are just over a mile apart

Middlesbrough office should be able to email you plans showing where the graves are, if you ask them, they are in the process of marking the plans to show if there are headstones or not.  Some of the older graves don't have headstones, some have been removed and the plots re-used.  With plans, it shouldn't take you too long to find the ones you want.

Many thanks for getting back to me so quickly.  I wasn't sure where Acklam cemetery was, just the address Acklam Rd - and I know its quite a long road but I couldn't see any other cemeteries. 

I think my gt granddad will be in Linthorpe then. I remember walking with my mum & gran along Acklam Rd a few times, from my gran's house on Maldon Rd, into the town centre.  My memory is obviously associating that part of the cemetery with gt grandad's grave, so that's why I think he's in there.  Fairly near the road, at the end of a row.

It will be interesting to see if I've remembered correctly!

Hopefully all will be clearer when you get the grave numbers from the cemetery office.  When you've made another reply on here, you'll be able to send pms (personal messages) by clicking on the little green scroll under someone's name -  if you do that and send me your email address I will email you a general plan of Linthorpe cemetery showing all the sections, the more detailed section plans you can get from the cemetery office.  You'll need those as it's quite a large cemetery, if you only have the one day to do that plus a visit to the archives in the town centre.

Hi Guys
            I Live in New Zealand and are trying to find some information about my great grandparents. In the 1911 census they where living at 17 South Tce Linthorpe Middlesbrough there names were Jonathan and Elizabeth Emily Holland,Its says there were 2 children that have died. The question I wanted to ask is how can I find out there names,date of birth etc, I have looked up Free BMD but there are two many Hollands in that date period and I would just be guessing,any help would really be appreciated. Some facts about them are:
Jonathan and Elizabeth Emily Holland
Married : 1884 Middlesbrough
Living Children:  Charles Holland  Born 1891  (Died in NZ)
                         Ethel Holland     Born 1893
                         Florrie Holland    Born 1896
                         Eva Holland        Born 1900

                              Thank you for any help in finding out the names etc of the two children that died

The parents' marriage was in 1889, Jonathan Holland to Elizabeth Emily Claxton

Freebmd shows about 10 infant deaths for the surname Holland in Middlesbrough from 1889 to 1911, the only way to find out if their mother's maiden name was Claxton is by checking with the register office, who only confirm those details if you are going to buy the certificates.

Perhaps you could email Middlesbrough register office to ask if any of those children had a mother Emily with maiden name Claxton
