Death Cert : Help to find
« on: Saturday 09 July 11 10:55 BST (UK) »
Trying to find the death cert for John McGarrigle B: 24/6/1866 in Port Glasgow.
Married to Bridget Welsh (or Walsh) in Port Glasgow in 1888 occupation given then "seaman merchant service"

Can find him on the census returns until 1901 and his occupation was listed as shipyard worker or seaman on these returns.  Signed his daughters death cert in 1912 but is not noted on the 1911 census - his family were still in Port Glasgow but his wife is not listed as widow or head (just states wife) and he is not listed on the return.

Any help appreciated would like to know when/how he died.

Hi carolmcg
do you know John's parents names from his birth and marriage cert
may help narrow it down a bit if the informant knew his mothers maiden name
doing a general search on SP there are none that fit with a 1866 birthdate
but then again that would depend on the informant knowing his date of birth

He was the son of Daniel (Denis) McGarrigle and Gila (Julia) McCoul.
I have his birth and wedding cert but can't find the death. His wife died in 1921 and on it she is noted as "widow of John McGarrigle" Holderon as the occupation.

From the info I have it would have to have been between 1912 and before 1921.
His occupation seems to change between jobs in the shipyards to seaman on the documents over the years.

Yes that is the right family. I have found them in 1881 - 1891 - 1901.
Nothing for 1871(he would only have been around 5 then) and not noted with the family in 1911 census pulled from Scotlands people.

If he was away at sea when the 1911 census was done then I am wondering if his death was connected with his occupation but not sure where to look for these details.

No John McGarrigle's
on SP in Minor Records this is where you would find his death if he died while at sea as a seaman
although I am not sure if that covers the Merchant Navy

Think I am going to have to try and approach this from another angle.

If his wife died in 1921 then chances are she would have been buried beside her husband so if I can get details of the grave I might be able to find out who is in there and what dates they were buried from Inverclyde Council......can't think on any other way to find anything right now :(
