William Pickles in Heptonstall
« on: Friday 08 July 11 01:40 BST (UK) »
Hello, I am trying to locate Mary Pickles' maiden name before she married William Pickles around 1796 or 7 in St. Thomas, Heptonstall. I have found a William Pickles who married Mary Crabtree on 25 December 1796 and a Mary Ingham who was married to a William Pickles on 7th February 1797.

William and Mary Pickles had a daughter, Hannah Pickles, who was baptised on 12 April  1803 at St. Thomas.  Hannah married John Horner on 30 September 1830 at St. John the Baptist, Halifax.  Their witnesses were William Eastwood and William Rushworth.

Thank you for any help.

Hi Marion,
Some pointers for you -
It is likely that Mary was married at or near her place of residence, the words 'of this parish' on the marriage registration gives a clue.

Eastwood and Rushworth might have been officials at St John the Baptist Parish church, I have come across their names before but I can't remember the context at the moment.

I'm not sure if the Heptonstall records have found their way onto Ancestry yet but I think a transcription is available from Calderdale FHS

Heptonstall (a really picturesque village)  has a website with links to a set of lovely old photos

It is said that there could be 250,000 burials in the St Thomas's churchyard !

That would be Blackshaw Head (hamlet near Heptonstall)
