Hi Anny

I have a Lawes family from the Hoxne area. Martha Lawes born about 1690 in Hoxne probably. She wed a Joseph Cackamole and they had a daughter Dorcas Cackamole in 1712 in Earl Soham.

Hi Ben & Rogier, don't know if there is any connection with your families as the farthest I've got back so far is the early 1800s.  Will keep plugging away though and may come up with something. The names Mary and Martha do keep coming up a lot in the family although they would not have been unusual names in that era.

Cheers
Anny

Hi Anny,

I have John and Lydia Laws in my tree, I'm descended from their daughter Lydia (if we're talking about the same family here).

In 1841 John is a farmer at the Riverhead farm in Worlingworth; his age is given as 60 (probably rounded down), with wife Lydia, 55, and (presumably) children Samuel, 30, Lydia, 20 and George, 15. All are said to have been born in Suffolk.

There's also, at South Green, Worlingworth, Myra Laws, ag. lab's wife, 30, with children Mary, 9, Martha, 7, Samuel, 5, Lydia, 4, Elizabeth, 3 and George, 9 months. (Myra/Mirah was born in Laxfield).

Samuel Laws had married Myra Felgate on 26 Dec 1831.

The death of a John Laws is recorded in Hoxne RD in the September quarter of 1848.

Hi janglaschu,

To date I have still be unable to find the baptism of my John Laws born abt 1810 so have two possible sets of parents.  One set being your John & Lydia (possible Bartram) and another being John & Mary (possibly Hill). I also cannot find a baptism for John & Lydia's son Samuel. I think that it is my John Laws b1810 who is with Myra (widow of Samuel) in the 1881 census but would really like to find the baptisms to confirm his parents.

I haven't found baptisms for them either, Anny, so it may be that they were never baptised. Though brothers George and William were baptised in Hoxne, my ancestor, their sister Lydia, doesn't seem to have been. She died in 1848, so unfortunately I don't have a census which will give me her place of birth (other than that it was in Suffolk). It may be that some of the children were baptised in another parish, but I  haven't come across anything for them.

Hello all.

The shoemaker John Lawes from about 1805/1810 is my great great great grandfather.

If I am understanding correctly:

1. John
2. George Laws (moved to Durham county)
3. Henry Laws (still in Durham)
4. Harry Laws (real name Henry - my grandad)
5. My mum (Moved to Australia)
6. Me. (Born in Australia, moved back the UK - lucky me I get two passports!)

Anyone have any more information about these Suffolk Laws?

I'm not sure if that John Law(e)s was ineed related to my Laws.

I have John Laws, farmer, b.c. 1781, m. to Lydia, possibly died in 1848. He may have had a son John but I haven't yet proved the connection,

I'm descended from John Laws the shoemaker

1. John
2. William, moved to Durham
3.  Annie Dent nee Laws, Durham
4. Henry Dent, Durham
5.  William, my Dad, Durham then Australia with Mum & me.
I'm still in Australia (got two passports as well)

Afraid I haven't really got much more than I've written above. I know johns father was also named John but could never find a baptism for William to identify His mother.  We're you able to find a baptism for George?
