Lewis Family
« on: Tuesday 05 July 11 19:06 BST (UK) »
Hi
Information is very sketchy, but I am looking for help in finding out about a particular Lewis family from the Swansea area.
The only names I have are Mervyn Lewis (born between 1917 and 1922), who married Nancy (similar age).
I have found a good match on the birth,

Name: Mervyn H Lewis
Mother's Maiden Surname: Rees
Date of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec 1921
Registration district: Bridgend
Inferred County: Glamorganshire
Volume Number: 11a
Page Number: 1746 .

which matches the area, date and name quite nicely. This is supported by a marriage that matches:

Name: LEWIS, Mervyn H
Registration District:  Help  West Glamorgan
County:  Glamorganshire
Year of Registration:  1941
Quarter of Registration:  Jul-Aug-Sep
Spouse's last name:  Thomas
Volume No:  Help 11A
Page No:  Help  2965
MarriageFinder™: Mervyn H Lewis married Nancy Thomas

the middle name, "H", the area, date and the name of the bride all seem to match, and give weight to the birth information I mentioned also.
What I need now is to find the Rees (mother's maiden name) who married the Lewis around 1920, probably in the same general area. Could anyone help?

Cheers all!
Duncan

There are a lot of male Lewis/female Rees marriages around that time but not in Swansea - you need to buy a copy of his birth cert to establish his parents names

There are 2 in 1915 and one in 1913
Census Information is Crown Copyright, from www.nationalarchives.gov.uk
Carlin (Ireland & Liverpool) Doughty & Wright (Liverpool) Dick & Park (Scotland & Liverpool)

Hello Duncan  :)

If you are sure about the Swansea locality and that Mervyn married a Nancy, I would purchase the marriage certificate first. This should give the name and occupation of Mervyn's Father, and Mervyn's age and address at the time of the marriage. Mervyn's age will help you to find his correct birth record.

Bridgend is some distance from Swansea, and it is also worth looking at births in Llanelli and Neath districts as well as Swansea. Take alook at Freebmd:

Kind Regards
Morgan

Do you know when he died? There's a death registered at Swansea in August 1997 of a Mervyn Henry Lewis. The death reg gives his date of birth as 22/1/1912 which makes this birth reg look to be a match

Mervyn H Lewis march qtr 1912 Llanelly vol 11a pg 2643 mother's maiden name Hughes

The Llanelli registration district at that time covered places ( Gowerton & Loughor ) that are now in the Swansea registration district

Cornwall: Allen, Bevan, Bosisto, Carnpezzack, Donithorn, Huddy, James, Retallack, Russell, Vincent, Yeoman
Cards: Thomas (Llanbadarn Fawr)
Glam: Bowler, Cram, Galloway, James, Thomas, Watkins
Lincs: Coupland, Cram
Mon: Cram, Gwyn, John, Philpot, Smart, Watkins
Pembs: Edwards (St. Dogmael's)
Yorks: Airey, Bowler, Elliott, Hare, Hewitt, Kellett, Kemp, Stephenson, Tebb

1997 sounds about spot on I think. Not sure on the birth, but my previous estimates were more a vague memory than anything, so 1912 could well be accurate. Llanelli(y) sounds good also as they lived close by in Gorseinon.

Thank you so much, you've been an excellent help!
