ROBERTS Catherine
« on: Tuesday 05 July 11 07:26 BST (UK) »
Hi - can anybody please help me with any information about my husbands maternal grandmother.
The only information I have is from his mother's birth certificate which states:

Catherine ROBERTS
23 years old in 1919
Place of Birth is Bristol, England.

The certificate also states that she was unmarried when she gave birth to both her children who were born in Mayfield, NSW, and were made state wards when they were very young children.

Any help very much appreciated.  Thank you.

The only name which came up is Kate Roberts.

From the 1901 census:
Address: Woodford, Alkington, Parish of Thornbury. Gloucestershire.

Edward Roberts (head). age 44. Pearl Assurance Agent. Born Berkeley, Glos.
Mary E (wife). age 45. Born Tytherington, Glos.
Florence (dau). age 18. Domestic Servant.
Mabel (dau). age 15. Domestic Servant.
Gilbert (son). age 13.
Lottie (dau). age 11.
Edward (son). age 8.
Kate (dau). age 6.
John C (son). age 4.
Frederick J (son). age 10 mths.
Bob (son). age 10 mths.
All children born Berkeley, Gloucester.

The only birth which looks right is:
Kate Roberts. Mar qtr. 1895. Registered Thornbury, Gloucestershire. Ref: 6A 234.

Will send you a PM with the 1911 census because of copyright.

Hi Mike, your chose if I may say, is a bit hit and miss, why not for example pick the Kate Roberts b 1895 in Barton Regis, this at least encompasses North Bristol and Clifton, I am not saying you are wrong, but maybe more info ie who possibly accompanied Kate/Catherine to Australia may be the best course, what do you think?

Hi Keyboard86

Yes you're quite right, probably should have asked for more detail before going off half cocked :o
I had a look on the Passenger List up to 1919 and can't see her anywhere, mind you age is probably catching up with me ;D
Let's see what the poster has to say, a bit more info might help.

Cheers ............. Mike

Hi

Thank you very much for your trouble.  Unfortunately that is all the information I have about Catherine Roberts.  I have no idea when she came to Australia or if she travelled with anybody.  I have tried searching shipping records but there are too many Catherine Roberts in the number of years that I need to look at - between her birth year, 1896,  and the birth of her first child, 1916.
Unfortunately I don't know if she ever did marry after the birth of her 2 children.  And there are no court records for when her children were made state wards.

I guess it is too hard with such little information.  Thank you very much again.
