If you go to the BDM website

https://www.bdmhistoricalrecords.dia.govt.nz/search/

You can get the date of death by narrowing the dates until you have the correct date

John Baker Hawes died 10/9/1989,I got this by elimination

I forgot to mention that when requesting death notices from the NZSG it is usually with a donation and a SAE
