Maybe a Red Herring;
1851 there is a Robert OSFIELD age 15, born c 1836, Norton, Yorkshire.
With Parents WILLIAM/ANN
HO107/2348/138/5
Robert OSFIELD sentenced 1878 to 6mths for Larceny in Yorks also. Trial date 15 Oct 1878.

Looking at the 1871 Census I think Catherine is Elizabeths Daughter as there is a gap in Childrens ages.
Tried to find them in 1861 with no luck.

The only suggestion I can make at the moment is to buy a copy of that 1885 marriage cert.

It should have his fathers name on it and should show if Robert was a widower as I can't find another earlier marriage for him to Elizabeth.  There is no Elizabeth Osfield death between 1881-1891 either so perhaps they never married

Elizabeth was b Scotland but there is no Robert Osfield marriage on Scotlands People

freebmd has 2 marriage in Hartlepool Durham - Kate Allen Osfield in 1880 and Mary Allen Osfield in 1887

1871 has a daughter Catherine b Liverpool 1858 and a daughter Mary b Hartlepool 1865
