Hi, can you please help I am looking for a look up for Robert Osfield c1836 which reads on the 1871 census Reading then 1881 and 1901 Waltham.

1871 census shows birthyear 1829
1881 shows 1825

He received a 4mth prison sentence 2.7.1883 for obtaining money by means of false pretences after a previous conviction for an indictable misdemeanour

Are you sure you have the right 1901 entry?  Birthyear is 1841 and wife is Margaret - not Elizabeth

In 1891 they are indexed as ORFIELD  RG12 Piece 4241 Folio 53 Page 16 and Robert is 50 b Brentford Middlesex

;)Thank you for the information, I am aware that a Robert Osfield is showing up with a Margaret and an Elizabeth poss 2 marriages?

1881 born in Waltham  he is married to Elizabeth

1901 with Margaret born in Waltham

Waltham villiages are quite small and it seemed strange a man living in Newcastle would know of there existence, so that is the best lead I have.

Please can you tell me where the the sentencing was in 1883.

The sentencing was in Durham

There is a very wide disparity in birthyears between the censuses

1825 b Waltham Berks (1881)
1829 b Reading (1871)
1841 b Brentford Middlesex (1891)

He died in 1910 aged 68 - birthyear 1841/42

Marriages June qtr 1885   
Margaret Carroll    Newcastle on Tyne  10b 110a   
Robert Allen Osfield

1871 shows a son Daniel aged 3mths

In 1881 Daniel is in a young offenders institution

6 January1888 Northumberland Daniel John Osfield sentenced to 4mths in prison for housebreaking and larceny

4 July 1888 Northumberland he appeared on the following separate offences

Larceny & receiving - 9mths hard labour

Housebreaking - 3 months to run consecutively

Larceny & Receiving - further 3 mths to run consecutively

So he received a total of 15mths in all

Daniel died in 1945 in Exeter Devon

  Thank you so much for this information, now trying to piece together, not my family, but quite a shock for my cousin's husband!!!

I'm afraid over the years I take ages and birth places on census records with a pince of salt.
