Katherine Doyle born Briston in 1/8/1872
« on: Monday 04 July 11 13:23 BST (UK) »
I am looking for information on a Katherine Doyle who was apparently born on 1/8/1872 in Briston to Patrick Doyle and Mary Snee, both from Ireland. This information is from Katherine's social security file in the US. I have been unable to find any information on any of these names from the area, nor can I find Katherine's birth in the GRO index.

Hi Josh & welcome to RootsChat

Do you have any idea when Katherine arrived in the States or where she lived - censuses, naturalisation etc?

The more we know, the more likely we are to be able to help   :)

It's possible that she wasn't actually born in Briston, it's just the first place she remembered as a child.  That happens a lot on England & Wales census returns!

I don't know how much paper evidence she would have had to supply to the US Social Security people

Hi Linda,

Yes, it was in American format. I should have thought about that. She was supposedly born January 8, 1872. She shows up in New York in the 1900 census, married to John McDonald. According to that census, they had been married for 10 years and she arrived in 1888, although in 1910 she is listed as arriving in 1886. John arrived in 1882 from Scotland according to his naturalization index card.

Both of their parents were apparently born in Ireland. She died on 9 Dec 1966 in New Jersey. I have not yet ordered a copy of her death certificate to see if it provides any additional information.

I have found a marriage record for a Patrick Doyle and Mary Snee in the GRO index in Mar 1866 in Dewsbury. However, what confuses me is that there is also a listing in the index for a marriage between those same names in Dewsbury in June 1896. I thought perhaps this could be a renewal of vows, but I am not sure how common that was in the 19th century. Plus, Dewsbury does not appear to be near Briston, so I have been hesitant to order a copy of this record. Particularly because I have no additional information to cross reference it against.
