Mellon/Beatty families of Wicklow
« on: Monday 04 July 11 13:16 BST (UK) »
I am looking for information on the Mellon and Beatty families of Wicklow.

Joseph Mellon (b. ~1822) married Elizabeth Beatty (b. ~1839) in New York, although both of them were born in County Wicklow. According to Joseph's death certificate, his mother was Eliza (no maiden name). Elizabeth's parents were James Beatty and Hannah.

Any information on this family would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Any idea what part of county Wicklow your Mellon/Beatty lived (i.e. parish or townland), and what denomination they were ?

Both Joseph and Elizabeth were born a long time before the start of civil records so you would need to check for available parish records.

slightly later than your direct connections but might be related if some family remained in Ireland...

just two Mellon households listed in Co. Wicklow that I see on Griffith's Valuation.

Peter Mellon, townland of Curranstown Lower near Arklow
leasing a house from John & Patrick Grannell - dated 1854

 William Mellon, Bray town
owing a house and property freehold - dated 1852

see : Mellon, Co. Wicklow

Also quite a small number of Beatty entries - the first few appear as landlord/lessor for a number of properties around Redcross with a date of 1854.

Those listed as occupiers are :

Frederick Beatty, townland of Carrigroe, civil parish of Derrylossary
leasing 'House, office and land' and also 'Water / Lough Dan' (1854)

John Beatty, townland of Ballymoat, near Glenealy
leasing house office & garden (1854)

Thomas Beatty, Woodenbridge Row, Wicklow town
   leasing a house (1854)

see : Beatty, Co. Wicklow

The transcripts, return images, and maps for Griffith's are available at  http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml

Hi Shane,

Unfortunately, I do not. On their gravestone it says only county Wicklow and I have not seen a parish or townland anywhere else. So far, I have not been able to track down immigration or naturalization records in the US. I know that they were in the US by at least as early as 1854, since that is when their first son I am aware of (Peter) was born.

One of their sons was Catholic, and I imagine that they were Catholic as well, since they are all buried in a predominantly Catholic cemetery in NY (Calvary). None of those Griffith's Valuation names help me yet, since I do not know Joseph Mellon's father's name and none of the Beattys are the name I have for Elizabeth's father.

How would I go about searching parish records if I did have the information as to what parish they were from? Thanks.

the problem is that not all parishes have records back as far as the 1820s and 30s (some start much later), and not all are available online, which is why you need to know the parish first..

Baptism and marriage transcripts for a number of Co. Wicklow parishes are available on the pay-website of the Irish Family History Foundation at : www.rootsireland.ie
