McGregors at Kilmadock
« on: Monday 04 July 11 03:21 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone,
I've been researching my McGregor family who came to Australia in 1852. They were John McGregor (born 1808 St Ninians), Margaret McGregor (maiden name Stewart born 1806 Balquhidder), Janet McGregor (born 1846) and Isabella McGregor (born 1848). I believe I found them in the 1851 Scottish census living in the East Muir Cottage Kilmadock. This census also lists Johns mother as Isabella McGregor (born 1779). Does anyone know anything more about this family? Or the east muir cottage? I'd love to confirm Johns parents names and trace it further back.
Hope someone can help! :)

This family on the 1851 doesn't seem to quite tie in with the birth and place you have for John - it says c 1811 and place of birth Balqhuidder, Perthshire. St Ninian's is Stirlingshire. Are the details you already have for him correct - where were they from? Margaret's birth date on census is c 1811 too. Ages often wrong on census though so not too big a discrepancy.

Well I have Margaret and John's death certificates. The birth dates are probably right. Though as the details on the death certificates were supplied by others its possible they didn't get the exact birthplace right. It was just the best match I could find but its not 100%. If the family can be found somewhere else that wolud help me too! Thanks for the reply :)

I can see why you switched. I started on the McGregors too and then was quickly distracted by the Stewarts who are much better documented. Ive returned to the McGregors now. For the stewarts I found this site extremely helpful http://www.chuckspeed.com/balquhidder/balquhidder%20stewarts.html
