Hartshead, Yorkhire village- info + Drake family
« on: Sunday 03 July 11 15:20 BST (UK) »
Hello, I'm new to this so I hope I'm posting this in the right place.

I am researching my ancestors, the Drake family who lived in Hartshead village in the 17 & 18 hundreds.
I am hoping for:
a) any information on Hartshead village in general.
B) Any info on the Drake family. They were stone masons so I think they built a lot of property in Hartshead around the New Inn area. I think they lived near Prospect Hall.
C) Any old photographs of Hartshead and if any of them are in it. They were a prominent family in a small village so hopefully someone know about them.
Worth a shot posting on here..

Thank you
Hellieflea

Can you add some info re: names and birthyears please - the 1881 census has 32 people with the surname Drake living in Hartshead

If you have the family on the 1881 census - can you please post full details of the entry to help us find them on earlier/later censuses
Census Information is Crown Copyright, from www.nationalarchives.gov.uk
Carlin (Ireland & Liverpool) Doughty & Wright (Liverpool) Dick & Park (Scotland & Liverpool)

Hi, thanks for the response.

I'm especially interested in Joseph and Eliza Drake and their children. They are my great great great great grandparents. Joseph Drake was born in 1808 but he died in 1874 and Eliza 1813 to 1882.

I'm trying to find exactly where they lived and on 1851 census they're near to "Crowtrees" which no longer exists. Is the best way to pin point an address perhaps a death certificate? + an old map copy? Three of their children died.
I have done a fair bit of research on the censuses myself but obviously any additional information is really helpful.
thank you for your help

This might be useful if you contact the people who posted......

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?action=printpage;topic=344590.0

familysearch.org has this Joseph Drake......
Baptism Date - 10 Apr 1808,
Baptism Place -Hartshead,
Father - James Drake

There is also this marriage.....
Joseph Drake to Eliza Horsfall on 19 Oct 1829 at Hartshead.

There are just too many Eliza Horfalls born about 1800-1810 in that area to pinpont her birth accurately.

Looks promising - you might now have your great great great great great grandmapents as well!

On the census occupation- mason or stonemason could have been anything from a high skilled stone carver working on things like gravestones but mostly in country area like Heartshead it would a drystone waller or Quary labourer. House builder would be just that! a builder.
In my opinion the marriage residence is not always the place of birth. Never forget Workhouse and overseers accounts records of birth
