Edward MENSFORTH, birth in tasmania
« on: Sunday 03 July 11 07:18 BST (UK) »
Hi, I am struggling to find any record of my great grandfather's birth, his name was Edward Mensforth, son of John Mensforth, soldier in 51st Kings Own Yorkshire regiment in Tasmania. He had a brother Thomas Ralph & sister Ann, both born in Corfu, sister Sarah, born in Sydney, brother John, born and died Tasmania 1840, and Amelia Jane & Agnes, both born in Tasmania. I think his mothers name was Isabella Marvoa but on Edwards Marriage certificate to Maria Fanny White in 1881, he listed his mother as Elizabeth. John was discharged from the army in 1846 and went to SA, Edward may have been born there and not in Tasmania as thought. If anyone has any ideas or information that can help me, I would be grateful.  :-\
I hope I haven't locked it this time  :-\

No, he died in Sydney. It was an uncle of his that died in SA. I have his marriage certificates and his death certificate but alas, no details of his birth only that he was born Tasmania and his father was John Mensforth, soldier in 51st foot Regiment/ I am trying to chase his fathers movements to see if Edward was born on ship or another country somewhere as John sailed quite a bit according to his letters that I managed to get hold of. Thanks for your interest. :)

Hi,

Nothing about the birth as yet but just a snippet about John & Thomas Mensforth.

From the Hobert Town Gazette from the Convict Department.
On September 4th 1844 Mr M. A. McGilligan (Rajah) a pass holder was assigned to John Mensforth of Launceston.

also

Thomas Mensworth gets a mention in the June  8th 1857 SA Gazette under dissolution of partnership.
,
Basically, the business, "Mensforth and Gray" livery stable keepers and horse breakers located at premises attached to the Sir John Barleycorn Tavern, in Rundle-street, in Adelaide was disolved on 26th December 1846.

(The Gray was Mr John Gray)

Regards
Gerry
