In my experience my Merchant Navy family members seemed to have different jobs, if that's any help to you. Apparently it saved them being on the pool for too long, though they couldn't put themselves up for too skilled jobs, but in the Sea School they were taught various things, and a friend of the family was a 'boy' on board ship, when he could also have been a steward because he had passed that part.

So it could make sense, I am still trying to get his pre war records so hopefully it will confirm or deny these thoughts.
