Where is 'Aneen', County Louth anyone?
« on: Sunday 03 July 11 00:13 BST (UK) »
Hello everyone.

I am researching the O'Neills of the Fews as my wife's family are part of this clan.  A connected family lease from 1801 describes the lessee, Felix O'Neill, as being from "Aneen, County Louth". I cannot find reference to any such place existing today. Can anyone help me identify where this place was?

Thank you for any help you can offer me.

Best wishes,

Mark.

You can search for townlands, civil parishes etc on the townland database at www.thecore.com/seanruad

I had a quick look but dont see anything that seems that close - maybe Annies or Aghameen ?

is there any more detail on the document that might help narrow it - e.g. name of the landlord, a civil parish or barony ?

Thank you for the suggestions Shane.

The lease was for a house in the village of Crossmaglen, County Armagh. Now that I look at the date again I see that the first lease for the property in 1812 (not 1801, sorry) has Felix O'Neill simply listed as from Dundalk.  It is in the subsequent lease in 1818 that he is described as been from Aneen, County Louth. The landlord in County Armagh was Thomas Ball but I doubt if that's much help.

Any ideas?

Mark.

It could be a mishearing of a townland name... but none that I see can on the database seem to fit..  the other option I suppose is that it's the name of a farm/estate or house ?

Yes unfortunately. It is my working assumption that this
O'Neill was related to the O'Neill family based in Toprass and Barronstown in the west of the county, but I am trying to find some proof of that - so maybe the name is from somewhere around there?
