Patrick Sillery of County Meath and Drogheda
« on: Friday 01 July 11 06:25 BST (UK) »
Hi.......can anyone help me find out what happened to an elusive member of the family or does anyone know anything about him and his family?

Patrick Sillery born late 1849 early 1850. Place of birth is unconfirmed but other family members were born around Dunroe, Nobber, County Meath.  However the family has alot of connections with the U.S. - New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Ohio so perhaps he was not born in Ireland at all?  I don't know how to find out anything about U.S. births.

I know that his parents were Charles Sillery and Mary Cahill.  I'm told that siblings were Francis, Jane -1843 Ireland, John - 1844 Ireland, Anne, Mary -1847 Ohio, Joseph -1851 Ireland,Charles 1854 New Jersey and James 1855 New York but I have yet to prove all of this.  It sure seems like a lot of back and forth at a time when travel would have been expensive and taken a long time.

Patrick Sillery married Mary McVeigh (on her baptism her family name was spelled as McEvee)in 1878 in Drogheda, County Louth, Ireland. Their children were Mary Anne(1879), John/Jack (1880) and Alice (1882) - all born in Drogheda, County MEATH.

In 1887 Mary, Mary Anne, Jack and Alice are found on the Boston bound passenger lists on a ship called the Roman that departed from Liverpool, England. There is no sign of Patrick on the ship so perhaps he is in the U.S.

In 1901 Mary, Mary Anne, Jack, Alice and now with an additional child - Patrick Jr (born circa 1887 in the U.S. based on census dates) are back in Ireland living with her brother and there is no sign of Patrick Sillery Senior.  By 1911 I can't find the family although Mary Anne and Alice were old enough to be married and I know that Alice did stay in the Drogheda area and marry.

Can anyone help discover what happened to Patrick?

Thanks!!!

The passenger lists at http://www.castlegarden.org/ show some voyages for a Charles Sillery in the early 1850's, so maybe he did actually go back and forth?  Unfortunately, the passenger lists of that era give very little information and the actual images (available on subscription sites) can be hard to read.

As for US births, there's not anything comprehensive online for those states for the mid-1800's.  There are some records on www.familysearch.org, but they don't cover everyone.

There's no sign of a match for a potential death for Patrick on the Irish BMD Index, but he could have hist been recorded under some variation of his surname..

Using a search with father's name, there's a possibility for Patrick's baptism in 1849 listed on the index on the Irish Family History Foundation. They are a pay-website and the address is www.rootsireland.ie  The parish for this record seems to be Lobinstown (RC), which is located to the north of the county and adjacent to the border with Co. Louth, and just to the south east of the parish of Nobber.

Five other baptisms match the search with the father's name between 1846 and 1851.

A baptism record should give a little more detail... date of baptism, possibly a townland name, mother's full maiden name, and probably the names of two godparents.

Hello,

In 1901 census, Mary is described as a widow.
There are likely marriages for Alice (1907) , Mary Anne (1905)
and a death for Mary 1909 on Family Search site.
regards

Wowwwww...thank you so much everyone for helping me out with this little mystery.

Shanew.....that's Patrick alright so I now have a confirmed date of birth for him and some of the baptisms you found are members of his family.  Charles seems to be a family name as there are a few of them.  As we know the godparents names always keep coming up and are sometimes family members so I'll keep an eye out for repeats of those names. - thanks!!  I can't believe how much this family travelled back and forth and how many different states they were in because it's a large family and some of the kids were born in New Jersey, New York, Ohio and Pennsylvania.

Shellyesq ...thanks ...that's definitely Charles going back and forth.  And a new website that I hadn't found yet that I'll check out further with some of the other names!!!!

And Heywood I'll look up those two marriages and see can I find any further info there.  Perhaps it will list Patrick as deceased and answer my question as to why he didn't come back to Ireland with them.

Cheers everyone...love this site
