Looking for Catherine Ruling c1854
« on: Thursday 30 June 11 12:07 BST (UK) »
This is my first post on the Ireland forum and I am a bit clueless on Irish records I am afraid as this is my first Irish ancestor.

I am looking for any records pre 1882 relating to Catherine McGarn nee Ruling

Catherine is my gt gt grandmother and I am afraid I do not have much information on her apart from the fact that she was born in Ireland c1854. She married my gt gt grandfather (Alfred Shedwick) in 1882 in Manchester and her father is listed on the marriage cert as John Ruling - Labourer. She is named on this cert as Catherine McGarn, widow.

She is listed on the 1891 & 1901 Manchester census' as having a son James Mc Garn (McGann) born c. 1874 in Ireland

Any info would be gratefully received.

Many thanks,

Kelly

you really need to know where Catherine was born to see if any parish records are available.

Son James was born after the start of civil registration - so should appear in records. Do any of the census returns show a county of birth for him ? (1911 often does)

Catherine looks to have been born in County Cavan.

I dont see anything like that in the BMD index or Griffiths..

Hi Shane,

Great idea! I couldn't find him on the 1901 census and so never got round to looking for him on the 1911. I think I have found him on the 1911 though living in Warrington with a wife and 2 children one of whom were born in 1901 in Scotland which accounts for his absence in the English census.

He is listed there as being born in County Down.

Shane - Yes, Ruling seems to be impossible to find. It definitely says Ruling on her marriage cert though.

KGarrad - is that Catherine Ruling that you have found born in County Cavan?

Thank you! Again, didn't check the 1911 census! Who else is listed there with her?
