This is really a wild guess but I've looked at John and William and 1822+/- 2 and found this baptism on the IGI:

Kelso, Roxburgh 28 Feb 1824
William Mitchell. Parents John Mitchell and Elizabeth Waldie

Didn't Catherine return to Roxburghshire?

It might be worth you or others following this family to see if they appear after 1854. I have to be away now.

Did they had a daughter named Elizabeth ?

Just done a quick check and I don't think this one is yours.  In 1851, he's with his (widowed) mother and other siblings in Kelso (a blacksmith)  and,  by 1861, he's in Glasgow with a wife and 2 children - a smith and  horse shoer.

Yes he did have a daughter Elizabeth, I'm her descendant. Got any more possible William Mitchells?
As I said, the only family names I can give that might be Mitchell names are Alexander and Charles, possibly John. Elizabeth is named after her mother's mother.

Hi

It's 2.45am our time.  I've been watching late night tele - I don't usually stay up this late!

Could you tell me the name of the other daughter and Catherine's father's name. The trad naming convnetions might have been used.

I don't know the name of the other daughter, sadly, but Catherine's father was John Lindsay.
Thanks for the help  ;)

The 1904 death in Roxburghshire is not your Catherine's.  This one was a Mitchell before marriage and seems to have never moved outside of Scotland.

I think that you should go back to the NZ board and try to see if anyone can find any more info on the family.  It is probably very likely that you'll have to bite the bullet and buy some certificates. You can't go all that far in genealogy without some expenditure.
