William MITCHELL, unknown county
« on: Thursday 30 June 11 06:35 BST (UK) »
I am a descendant of William Mitchell, who arrived in NZ aboard the Stately with his parents on the 5th of February 1854. I am not even sure which country he is from, but I'm sure it is Scotland.

William was born c. 1822. He married a woman he met aboard the Stately, whom I have extensive information about. She was Catherine Forrest Lindsay, and may have returned to Scotland after her daughter's marriage, in which case she died in 1904 in Hawick, Roxburghshire, a place with no connection to the Lindsays.

William had at least 2 daughters, I don't know of any sons. The first daughter died aged 4. I am descended from the second.

Is there any way to find out about William Mitchell?

Thanks

Hi  :)

There are quite a few William Mitchell's b.c. 1822 on the 1851 censuses as well.

Do you know when and where he died as I think that might be the best starting point?  His death cert should show his parents names, especially as they came over with him.

Hi again

I've just noticed this earlier thread about them on the New Zealand board:

I'll have a read through it and it might help anyone else who may help you.

Yes I did, but in New Zealand death certificates before 1875 don't give anymore information than what's given on the website, apart from occupation, which I know, and country of birth, which I can guess quite confidently.

Added: William would have lived in the same place as his parents if they came to NZ with him. The only family names I have that may come from William's side are Alexander and Charles, they could also help.

You say that he came over with his parents. Were there any Mitchells of a rough age in the area that he settled in who might have been related?

I don't know how to find that out online for free, sadly. Their names were not written in the passenger list either, they're recorded as Mr and Mrs Mitchell  :-\

Did you pick up the name of John Mitchell in the account of the settlers:

Quote
The old school was not a large affair, neither were the pupils numerous.  On the  day of my first attendance, I think there were six of us all told.  There was James and Janet Willocks, John Mitchell, Lizzie Darling and myself.

It might be worth following up this John  as the author seems to mention William Mitchell quite extensively - and no other Mitchell is mentioned.

No, I missed that, but it might prove very helpful.
