Studying Genealogy-advice please!

Hello,

I was wandering if anyone maybe able to give me some advice?

Does anyone know the route I would need to take enable to become a professional genealogist?
I thoroughly enjoy the subject (working on my own and friends and family Family Trees) and would like to extend what is currently a full time hobby in to possibly a career path.
I have also been giving some thought to working in the field of 'Heir Hunters'.

What is the structure (ie; college/uni courses) for one who would like to pursue a career in Genealogy? Are there establishments that one would let you work for on a voluntary basis (enable to gain work experience), etc.?

Any advice (re how one would work towards becoming a professional genealogist or a Heir Hunter) would be much appreciated!

Try typing qualified genealogist into google. Several things come up but there is some very good advice from the Institute of Heraldic and Genealogical Studies - worth a read.

The National Institute of Genealogical Studies which is based in Canada and affiliated with University of Toronto (Canada) has online courses for family historians and genealogists which (they say, I haven't caught up with anyone yet who's done them) are suited to both family historians and professional genealogists.

Prices vary according to length of course.  They also have chat rooms and 'specialist' groups, according to the spiel they sent our FHS.

No harm in taking a look at their website.

Do you belong to any relevant societies?  They would probably welcome a volunteer who could help with their research queries, if you wish to gain experience. 

But don't expect to make a fortune overnight once you 'go public' - you have to establish your name, and your expertise, and your affordability.  It's like any new business.
