William GREY on 1841 census
« on: Wednesday 29 June 11 10:06 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I am hoping someone can help me please. There is an entry for William Grey birth 1821 at Gloucestershire, residence Tetbury on the 1841 census on Family Search. This entry for William Grey I cannot find on An.....try. What I would like to find out is who he is living with on this census.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi Pauline

I have looked at the 1841 census and the writing is faded but also hard to read.  He is staying in a house with 9 others and they are other workers.  He is a Agricultural Labourer as are half of the others living there and most of them are about 20 years old.  There are some older people and the head of the household is someone called Frances ??? who is 40 years old.
I cannot see anyone else living there with the surname Grey so presume he had moved away from home with his job?

Hope this helps

Hi Sandymc,

Thank you for that information. I was hoping there would be other family with him. He married not long after the 1841 census but information after that is hard to confirm.

Many thanks again for your help.

Hi Pauline

When you say you know he was married just after the 1841 census?
Do you have his wifes name or where it happened.
I have looked in the 1851 and 61 census and cannot find him.  Just
wondered if I could find him through his wife.
Not knowing where you are do you think or know if he emigrated to Canada
or Australia???
Anymore information you have I could try and research on but there is
so little to go on here I am finding it hard to find him??

regards
Sandymc

Hi Sandymc,

This is what I have found on William Grey/Gray. Not sure when he was born but think about 1818 in Shipton Moyne. I found a marriage on I think, Find My Past to Elizabeth/Caroline (she used both names) Large and ordered the certificate. They married on 3 July 1841 at Tetbury.

On the 1851 census William is a widower aged 32 and has a son George Henry aged 8 and Ann aged 5 both born at Tetbury. I have not been able to find a death for his wife. On the 1861 census William Grey is aged 45? living with parents William and Hester and is listed as married and after this I can find nothing else on William.

I am wondering if the William on the 1841, 1851 and 1861 are the same person and would appreciate your thoughts on this.

Regards Pauline from New Zealand

Hi Pauline

Still cant find a birth for William around 1818-21. I did find the following marriages at Shipton Moyne and wondered if these couples are also
your Greys?  Especially with the names of Williams children

Hester Mills married William Grey in 1811 at Shipton Moyne
Ann Bartlett married George Grey in 1790 at Shipton Moyne.

The church at Shipton Moyne is St John the Baptist. They have a website
if you do a search and there is also a e mail you can send.  Just wondered
if you told them you were in New Zealand that the Vicar might have a
look for you if the records are still there? I have done that before and the
Vicars are very friendly and interested in your stories.

Going out now so hope you can find out more soon

Hi Sandymc,

Thank you so much for all your time and trouble.

Yes Ann Bartlett and George Grey are my GGGG Grandparents and Hester Mills and William Grey are my  GGG Grandparents. They had six children William was the eldest and Charles b1836 was the youngest and was my GG Grandfather. He had a son William who emigrated to Qld, Australia in 1881.

I have been able to trace all Hester and William's children except William born 1818-21.

I will do as you suggest and e mail the church at Shipton Moyne and hopefully they may have a record of his birth.

Thank you once again I will let you know how I get on.

Kind Regards
Pauline

Hi Pauline,
Do you have the names of Hester Mills parents and any of her siblings?   My GG Grandfather was a Worthy Mills from Shipton Moyne.  He was born in 1832 and I am trying to sort out his family.  I know he was born in Shipton Moyne.  He came out to NZ in 1874.

Many thanks,
Gayle ???  ???

Hi Gayle,

Lovely to hear from you. I am afraid I have not been able to find anything further on Hester Mills. Hester has her place of birth as Westport, Wiltshire which I see on the map as being very close to Shipton Moyne. As there were only 350 people in Shipton Moyne in 1841 which is not many famlies it is quite likely that there is a connection between your Worthy Mills and my Hester. I did get in touch with the lovely Vicar in Shipton Moyne but he found a lot of the records were missing and could not find any of the baptism records I was after for William and Hester's children between 1814 and 1836.
If I find anything new I will let you know.

Regards Pauline
