I believe it would have been pre WW2 when my aunt was there however her mother died when she was a very young child so it is quite possible that she was sent there because her father found her to troublesome or difficult to deal with.

Have just checked our Kelly's for 1937

Ranelagh Road

................here is Paul's Road.................

Council School
 253 and 255
Handford Home for Feeble Minded Girls
Miss D. Miller, Matron

(modified, not sure, but I think the 'Council School' refers to the home)?

Just checked A2A as we now have the name of the school.

Found this

Daily Population Book (including mental defectives received from Handford Home 30 Nov 1944-31 Dec 1945)

Part of the records from St Clement's Hospital in Ipswich which are held at the Ipswich branch of the SRO.

I wonder what these poor girls were like, the 'labels' given to them sound so sad  :(

Think I will have to check at SRO and see what records if any they available.

The above was the only item listed on A2A with 'Handford House' included in the title, although there are a lot of records for St Clement's.
