Birth details sought.
« on: Tuesday 28 June 11 07:53 BST (UK) »
:) Hi,
I am searching for the birth details of Louise Florence Emily Birch.
The 1901 census states she was born in Kensington abt. 1872 but I have failed to find her details. She was the daughter of George Alphonse de Lamartine Birch and Fanny Read. I know she was married in Paris in 1897.
All help much appreciated.

Kind Regards,
Melm  :)

I think you may be getting bogged down with all the christian names....

In the 1891 census (RG12/99, F. 95, P. 5) there is a family fitting your description.

In this family there is a 'Florence E Birch" born in Kensington about 1871.

So maybe the Louise name was invented later, or was on the baptism and not the birth certificate ?

RIP 1949-10th January 2013

Best Wishes,  Nick.

I have had a good look, even using de Lamartine as a surname, but still can't find a birth for her.  I have found a marriage for George and Fanny in 1868, and also have found them on the 1871, 1881 and 1891 census's.  As Nick says there is a Florence E Birch on the 1891 census, and on 1881 she is Loui F E Birch.

I have found a baptism for Evelyn May Birch on 22 January 1875, she was born on 18 October 1874.  Parents George Alphonse de Lamartine and Fanny Birch.  At Bryanston St Mary, Westminster.  I am looking for the others.

??? Hi,
Many thanks for all of your time. Quite obviously it is not just me that couldn't find the record but that the record doesn't exist.
I now can only think she may have been born in France, with the french connection of her family, and her place of birth being wrongly entered on the census form.

Regards,
Melm  ???

Hi melm

Although civil registration started in 1837, the onus was on the registrars to find the births and register them. The law changed in 1875 and the onus was then put onto the parents to register the births.

George's birth may have been recorded because the registrar happened to be in the right place at the right time.

There doesn't appear to be a birth registration for either Reginald born 1869 in Taplow or Algernon 1870 in Walton on Thames.
