ROBSON George c1775-1852
« on: Tuesday 28 June 11 00:27 BST (UK) »
Presently researching my ggg grandfather George Robson, who was a painter in Hexham.
On the 1851 census he is in the Hexham workhouse and his birth place is given as Stokesley YKS.  I have had no joy in the parish of Stokesley and have now decided to persue the Hexham lead.  ROBSON is a diabolical name to trace because it is so prolific!
To add to the frustration, there are 2 George ROBSONs in Hexham, of about the same age.
One is married to Barbara on the 1841 census and has a Y to indicate that he was born in the county (NBL)  sons William and James.  This George was a soldier.   I've ruled him out because -
The other George is a painter with N on the 1841 census entry indicating that he is born out of the county.  He too has a son called William.

I am stumped!  Please can anyone advise me on my next move?

William Robson was born at Hexham in about 1817 (calculated from age on census)

Hi Overstayer,

The George Robson, Painter, in 1841 census in Hexham, has a Mary Robson, age 20, probably a daughter, living with him, but no William.
Which census do you have William, born Hexham, in? Can you give the reference info, or give some info on where to find him, wife, children, occupation etc.
I presume you have a copy of his Marriage Cert, which is how you know his father is George, a Painter?
With a bit more info, maybe we can find William, or some of his siblings baptisms, or Georges marriage, might give more clues.

Alan.
Northumberland - Smith, Willis,
Durham - Rogerson, Child
Cumberland - Irving, Hill
North Yorkshire - Layfield,
Ireland - Collins

Thank you Alan.
I have George's son William on the 1851 census for Westgate.  On the 1861 census for Hexham he is a widower aged 45, in the Hexham Workhouse.  I have his marriage cert in 1840 at Newcastle-upon-Tyne, which records his father George as being a painter.
I too suspect that the Mary Robson living with George (Hexham 1841) is his daughter.  The Free BMD has 26 Mary Robsons 1842 - 1863.  Apparantly I must buy a cert in order to discover whether I have the right one - an expensive business!
How I wish I could find George's marriage.  I have a list of Hexham marriages 1800 - 1837 with a George Robson marrying Isabella Forster in 1801, but will have to see how I can get a photocopy.
Paddy.

First of all - an apology - I thought I had posted this on Wednesday but obviously I didn't  :-\

I looked for your William in Hexham PRs 1815 - 1820 but could not see him.

I can look at the marriage details for you this coming Wednesday if nothing has come to light before then.

Christine

My take on William's Hexham birth in 1817 is from Census details.  I would very much appreciate your looking at the marriage details for Mary & George.
