James McWhinnie Tarbolton Ayrshire
« on: Monday 27 June 11 15:16 BST (UK) »
Hello    I am researching my McWhinnie roots .James McWhinnie b 1761  Tarbolon  married  15/1/1785  Margaret Finlay b 1764 Tarbolton . I hav found who  I think are James parents   James McWhinnie b c 1735  Ayrshire   m Agnes Downie  b1737 Ayrshire . I have no definate date for James birth or date for marriage , would like to  verify .
It is possible that at sometime the Mcwhinnie's came to Ayrshire from Northen Ireland  . Any help in any direction greatly appreciated .
               Many thanks Tineke

I know this isn't what you asked for but it might be useful to you in the future if you don't have it already.
Tarbolton churchyard has only one noted McWhinnie in the MI book:-
Er to mem of John Oliver d 7 Jun 1866 aged 71; also Helenora Hamilton McWhinnie his wife d 11 Mar 1865 aged 71
According to the IGI, James McWhinnie son of James Mc W & Agnes Downie was born in Ayr in 1761
I have Downies & McWhinnies in my family although I haven't researched the names  much but they were mining families and I have Annie Downie (h James Pearson, my gt gt g/parents) b Stair in 1802.  I also have a James Pearson married to Janet McWhinnie (parents Jas McW & Agnes McCrone) in New Cumnock.  My family were in New Cumnock, Dalmellington, Stair, St Quivox etc - all mining villages but I know the Pearsons were thought to have come from the north of England.

Thank you for your reply . My 3 x great grandfather was Cunningham Stuart McWhinnie 1795 -1862 b Tarboton married Mary Oliver   1796-1841    He move to Kilmarnock where he was Sheriff Officer  . Helenora McWhinnie who you mention was his sister , her husband John Oliver
1794-1866  was  Mary Olivers brother . 1841 census has John Oliver as gamekeeper at Bannockburn House Stirlingshire .
James Mc Whinnie  b 1761 Tarbolton was father to these McWhinnie's and was a Weaver . All the Olivers appear to be in the texile business either weavers or in the case of the women enmbroiderers . Two of the Oliver brothers  appear in the 1841 census 1 was an Innkeeper  2nd a Flesher They were all from the Tarbolton , Riccarton area .
                                     Thanks again Tineke

The name Oliver is mentioned on 5 gravestones in Tarbolton Churchyard, if you don't have a note of them, I'd be happy to let you have them.
