I had a look at this stone today and, in my opinion, it is beyond repair. It's local sandstone, which is soft and it would be impossible to pin it all together safely, even if you could find someone to do it.
Granite can be repaired but sandstone is a completely different ball game!

You would, of course, have to apply for permission to do anything to this stone.

Thank you for this information, I’m in Australia myself but rest assured I’ll pass this information on to my members. As you say, the headstone being sandstone could be problematic, one of our experts may still be able to give it a clean. Once again, thank you for the information provided, the photos will come in handy to the members. 😀

Good morning, I am hoping someone can help me locate a photo of Robina Mckenzie's grave, my Great Grandmother.
Robina was buried 28th July 1951 aged 67, Cambusnethan Cemetery, G0499. Her husband James McKenzie is in the same grave.
In newspaper reports it is stated that she was so well liked the people put money together and paid for a headstone. My planned trip to Scotland is getting further away.

I also have a mystery burial. Hector Mckenzie died 13 February 1888, 105 Berryhill Rows, Wishaw. The council cannot find a local burial. I don't think he would have been taken too far away for burial. His wife was Marion Wilson McKenzie (later McLauchlan d. Jan 1910 E 1713) and son James McKenzie.

Not sure if any family has headstones in the cemetery.  My other family names are Sarah Jane Guy d. 1931 D1419. Nathaniel Whitehead August 1940 B641 with wife Davina 1927.
Sarah Helen Guy 1888.

Thank you, I appreciate any help,
Mandy from Mackay Queensland, Australia

Hi Mandy,

Just noticed your posting today, I'll check for the stones as soon as the rain eases-up!

Your Hector McKenzie who died at Berryhill in 1888 was a pauper and there are some excellent poor relief applications for him, his widow and his son James, plus other family, on Ancestry.
As a pauper Hector would most probably have been interred in common ground at Cambusnethan cemetery. Unfortunately, there is a huge gap of about 25 years in the paupers burial book but I'm 99% certain that he's buried there.
The cemetery records I have end at 1917 but I will try to check out the plot numbers over at the cemetery office.
The only record I have is this one -

MARION McLAUGHLIN, Wishaw, aged 55 years. Widow.
Parents - Peter Wilson & Ann Beveridge.
Interred in plot E1715 on 18th January 1910.
Plot owned by Alexander McKenzie, coal miner, Bute Crescent, Belhaven Road, Wishaw.

I'll get back to you as soon as I can about the rest of your enquiry.

Hello again Mandy,

Just back from the cemetery and, unfortunately, after checking all 4 plots, I didn't find any stones.

G499. E1715. D1419. B641.

Next to E1715 there is a new stone, with the number E1715.5 and has a family called Donnelly on it, with the wife's maiden surname Corcoran. Could this be one of yours?

I have taken pictures of the plots, if you'd like to see them let me know.

Thank you Lodger,
The family tree you see on Ancestry is probably mine, McKenzie and Guy Family Tree.

MARION McLAUGHLIN is correct, her husband was HECTOR McKENZIE, d.1888. Son Alexander paid for the grave. Is there anyone else with her?

MARION WILSON GALLACHER d. 29th October 1964. G1830. Daughter of Marion McLauchlan.

The surname Corcoran is unfamiliar to me. I do have a Thomas Donnelly.
SARAH HELEN (PRENTICE HYDE) DONNELLY d. 30th March 1970, buried 2nd April 1970. G1679
THOMAS DONNELLY d. 26th February 1972.
Daughter HARRIET DONNELLY McILLWRAITTH d, 2nd December 2017 in Carluke. Husband was WILLIAM MCILLRAITH.

I find it odd that there was a report in the paper after Robina McKenzie's death in 1951 that the neighbors paid for a marker and there is nothing there now. Would the grave be reused?

Any photos, the gateway, would be greatly received as I am currently putting a book together for the family as a keepsake. Make some use of all the information I have gathered.

Again, thank you so much.
Mandy

Hi Mandy,

I haven't managed to check the records for these plots yet, I was in the cemetery a few days ago but the superintendent was too busy burying people to let me into the records!

As for Robina's marker, almost three-quarters of a century has passed, so there's no telling what has happened to this stone. It may have been a little marble one which, as soon as the rain gets into the smallest of cracks and freezes in the winter, gets split with the frost. It may have been vandalised or broken by the grass cutting machine and removed. Whatever happened, it's not there anymore.

Was William McIlwraith a Motherwell man by any chance?

Here are the plot pictures. I go back and get an entrance - gateway picture when I can.

First picture is plot B641.
Paterson, Torrance, Gilchrist - Hamilton Lanarkshire.
McCallum - Oban, McKechnie - Ross of Mull Argyll.
Scrim - Perthshire.
Liddell - Polmont,
Binnie - Muiravonside Stirlingshire.
Curran, McCafferty, Stevenson, McCue - Co Donegal
Gibbons, Weldon - Co Mayo.
Devlin - Co Tyrone.
