Hi Lodger!
Information on this specific family may have come up before but not sure how to find it, if it has:  Alexander Littlejohn (1826-1893) s/o Archibald and Marion (Paterson) was married to Bethea (aka Elizabeth) Reid (d.1885). They both died in Cambusnethan so may well be buried in its cemetery.
Born c 1828, Bethea/Elizabeth Reid's mother's maiden surname was Brownlie but I don't know her parents full names, have on you got any ideas? Or information on this Littlejohn couple (they had about 8 children as well)
(I did find a post about Arch'd and Marion and a couple of their children but they did have about 9 in all!)
Thanks in advance :-)

Hey Lodger, I was wondering about any images of graves with the name Muirhead on them, specifically the name John Muirhead or Thomas Muirhead. I'm looking for graves from 1750-1865 or so, my aunt was told by a family friend that there was a grave in Cambusnethan with Thomas Muirhead listed on the gravestone with his father's name as John, but I cannot find any information on a John Muirhead.

anyways, I was just wondering if you do have any photos of a grave similar to the one I've described?
thank you.

Hi Dave,
There are a few MUIRHEAD stones but this is the only one that fits your description.
Since I transcribed it back in 1983 it has been broken and the reverse side is not visible.

The transcription differs a little from the actual picture, this is because there was no other means of transcribing but by using paper, pencil and my old Remington typewriter. I followed the guidelines set down by the Scottish Genealogy Society for transcriptions of stones, using Father - Mother - children style, all relationships were to the first name on the list. This is a two-sided stone, the side now hidden is the oldest one.

"Thomas Muirhead died 11th February 1896 aged 62 years. His wife Elizabeth Hastie died 4th March 1900 aged 60 years. Their son Thomas, corporal 1st Battalion Scots Guards died 13th March 1882 aged 24 years. Janet Muirhead died 20th August 1905 aged 80 years".
Reverse side of this stone -
"Erected by John Muirhead and Elizabeth Hamilton in memory of their son John who 6th January 1828 in his 1st year. Their son John died 8th December 1843 aged (...). Elizabeth Hamilton died 24th May 1848 aged 54 years. John Muirhead died 8th August 1867 aged 70 years".

There may be other information about this burial plot in the records, if it's the one you're looking for just let me know and I'll see what else I can find.

Hello Lodger, not used to this site, can’t see a clear area to reply, hope this is it. 😊 Anyway, the headstone you talk about for Thomas Hastie, Scots Guards, do you still have a photo of it pre damaged? I’m Admin for facebook page, “Scots Guards Pictorial II” members there are looking at the possibility of getting it restored. Thank you.

Hi qp2742,

Welcome to Rootschat. Unfortunately, the above photograph is the only one I have of this particular stone. It was upright and intact when I transcribed it back in 1983 but sometime between then and 2015 when this picture was taken it has suffered the fate of many other headstones.

Kind regards,

Lodger

Hello again, thank you so much for your advice. One other thing, would you happen to know the exact location of this gravesite, I have members who are very keen to restore this headstone. Once again, thank you, any information is appreciated.

I will go and have a look in the next couple of days, just to make sure it's still there. I have a little, hand-made plan of the churchyard and it's no trouble to check it out. I'll get back to you asap.

Many thanks again for your help, we have someone who hopefully can repair the headstone, another who cleans and can re gild it.
