Headstone pictures CAMBUSNETHAN CHURCHYARD WISHAW

Hi doolittle72, the stone is an obelisk which is now lying flat. The inscription is as follows -

"Erected to the memory of John Allan who died 1st June 1848 aged 58 years. John his son died 3rd March 1853 aged 10 years. Sarah Hamilton his wife died 14th January 1867 aged 68 years.
The burying place of Alexander Allan and Agnes Steel his wife. Alexander their son died 31st March 1856 aged 3 years. The above Alexander Allan died 25th November 1901 aged 79 years, his wife Agnes Steel died 11th March 1914 aged 92 years. Marion Reid Allan died 24th February 1910".

If this is the right family let me know as this stone forms part of a larger Allan plot.

I'm a few years late but, i've just come across this and the they are all direct descendants of mine. You mentioned that it was part of a larger Allan plot and I was wondering if you had any more information on that.

Hi Callum,

You already have the information and a photograph of the Allan & Hamilton stone.
I don't have pictures of the other 3 stones on this plot but I do have the inscriptions.
They are as follows -

"James Allan died 27th November 1867 aged 71 years. His wife Isobel Cooper died 5th May 1863 aged 62 years. Their son Alexander died 4th January 1843 aged 16 years. Their son John died 12th February 1862 aged 32 years".

"Erected by Alexander Allan and Catherine Smith in memory of their son Alexander who died 1835. Their daughter Isabella died 1854. Their daughter Janet died 1862 and Catherine died 1854".
 (This stone is very worn and in poor condition, is the "Catherine 1854" the mother or another daughter?)

"William Allan died 8th September 1872 aged 80 years. His wife Margaret Hendrie died 10th February 1861 aged 54 years. Margaret Allan Gold died 8th February 1899 aged 43 years (also her 2 sons) Son Alexander died 16th June 1921 aged 85 years (his wife Agnes Graham died 6th January 1921 aged 85 years and their son Alexander died 4th September 1922 aged 52 years)."

These stones are all in the old churchyard at Cambusnethan in Wishaw, the modern, municipal cemetery adjoins the churchyard.
There are Plot records for the churchyard but these only begin about 1875 but they are supplemented by the entries in the gravediggers Day Book from the municipal cemetery (the same men were used for both burial grounds).

First of all, I will list the entries in the Plot Book for the Allan & Hamilton lair, as that's the one you are sure you are descended from. (Remember it only begins at 1875 and isn't 100% accurate).
All dates are of interment.

In the Centre compartment -
MARION REID ALLAN, aged 54 years, 26th February 1910.
In the North compartment -
ALEXANDER ALLAN, aged 79 years, 27th November 1901.
AGNES ALLAN, aged 92 years, 14th March 1914.

The Allan & Cooper plot next.
Owners were James Allan & Isobel Cooper.

In the South compartment -
JAMES FLEMING, aged 62 years, 26th December 1885.
CHRISTINA FLEMING, aged 69 years, 11th March 1901.
In the Centre -
WILLIAM ALLAN, aged 60 years, 1st June 1894.
In the North -
ISABELLA McARTHUR, aged 63 years, 18th January 1889.

Next is the Allan & Smith plot.

Many thanks for sending this information. With John Allan being my direct relative, and him dying before records kept names of parents, his line ended with him. Thanks to yourself, i've now discovered that Alexander, William and James were his brothers and he was born in Liberton, Edinburgh and of course, i now know who his parents were.
James Allan was actually a grave-digger in the 1851 census.

Ancestry has a poor relief application from the parish of Cambusnethan for William Allan, aged 58 years. the claim was made 18th May 1894 from 87 Stewarton St, Wishaw where he was in lodgings with Mrs McGlone.
He was unmarried, a protestant and his occupation was shoemaker.
He states he was born in the parish of Cumbernauld and that his parents were James Allan, gravedigger and Isabella cooper, both dead at the time of this application.
He claims he has lived at his present address for 2.5 years and prior to that he lived in Cam'nethan for 17 years with Mrs Fleming.
May 18th 1894 - given relief of one shilling.
May 21st 1894 - given relief of 3 shillings.
May 28th 1894 it was recorded that he was now being looked after by friends from Glasgow.
June 5th 1894 - Now dead.

Mrs Fleming may have been a married sister perhaps? She may be the Christina Fleming who is buried in the Allan & Cooper plot?

"Cam'nethan" is the local pronunciation of Cambusnethan and this helps distinguish the village from the parish of the same name. Cam'nethan is still the favoured name for the village to this day, even though it is considered (by outsiders) to be just another district of Wishaw.

Thanks for sending all of this, it’s a big find in helping me trace this line back a further generation. The final Allan that you weren’t sure of is definitely a relative. Brother of John Allan (1790 - 1848) my gt gt gt gt gt grandfather. The missing surname for the mother is Watt.
Thanks to yourself I discovered that John Allan and his brothers were born in Mortonhall, Edinburgh and had moved down to Cambusnethan, most likely in the late 1790s.

It’s interesting that for Agnes Allan who died in 1914, her parents are down as James Steel and Agnes Reid. I have her mother as Marion Reid, which is how she appeared in censuses. I’ve not been able to find a death for her yet so I’ll have to look her up under Agnes.

As for your question about the Allan/Steel connection a few generations back, I couldn’t say in all honesty but since I’ve found my Allan’s were originally from Edinburgh perhaps not, but of course they could’ve originally come from Cambusnethan hence why they moved down there. I doubt we’ll know though.

Is there a cemetery map of some kind that could help me locate the Allan graves?

Also, are you aware if other cemeteries kept day books or was Cambusnethan just very organised?As this is really valuable information for those interested in family trees.

There isn't a plan or map of the old burial ground at Cambusnethan but the municipal cemetery has a section map inside the Kirk Road entrance.  If you plan to visit the old burial ground I'd be happy to meet you there, I know roughly where the Allan plot is situated.
Most other cemeteries have Day Books, the Cambusnethan cemetery has them from 1861, shortly after it opened.
