Hi Lodger

Very sad indeed. They did have 13 children that I am aware of between1841 and 1868. She had her first child at  16. Seems that things were bad from 1864 to 68 although they were probably tough times for all working people in those days.

Hi Lodger

I'm back. You kindly gave me information on the Barr plots in Cambusnethan Old Cemetery and one burial in the John Barr/ Martha Reid plot was Agnes Stevenson. I know she is the Barr's granddaughter  and the daughter of Richard Steventon and Elizabeth Hamilton Barr. You will notice that I write Steventon which is how his father and grandfather who hail from Shropshire have their names spelled in the records down here, not only on the census but in the nationally held BMD records. I have an aunt called Agnes Stevenson in Lanarkshire and wonder if on moving to Scotland they used the 's' spelling.

Richard and Elizabeth had several children after their marriage in Mar 27 1885 in Wishaw and I wonder if there are any records of these Stevent(s)ons.

Richard's sister Mary Ann Steventon married Elizabeth Barr's brother Matthew Murdoch Barr and they also had several children in Wishaw and surrounding areas.

Finally the Steventon parents both died in Wishaw

Richard Steventon 1830 - Sep 18 1901 and Susannah Steventon(ms possibly Allford) 1835 - Nov 17 1882

As always any help would be much appreciated :) :)

I could only find one entry for the name Steventon -

GEORGE STEVENTON, tinsmith, Wishaw, aged 22 years, unmarried.
Parents - Richard Steventon & Susannah York.
buried in the new cemetery, plot E147, on 10th December 1897.

Also in E147 is

WILLIAM C. BROWN, wishaw, aged 2 years & 9 months.
Parents - Gavin Brown & Mary Ann Cunningham.
Burried on 11th January 1899.

The Day Book for 1901 ends at 20th August, so no luck there and the Day Book for 1882 hasn't survived. However, North Lanarkshire Council may have the Plot book for E147 and it should contain the records of anyone else buried there.
Paterson, Torrance, Gilchrist - Hamilton Lanarkshire.
McCallum - Oban, McKechnie - Ross of Mull Argyll.
Scrim - Perthshire.
Liddell - Polmont,
Binnie - Muiravonside Stirlingshire.
Curran, McCafferty, Stevenson, McCue - Co Donegal
Gibbons, Weldon - Co Mayo.
Devlin - Co Tyrone.
Leonard - County Donegal & Glasgow.

Hi Lodger

Thanks for that. The Steventon's were all born in and around Wellington, Shropshire now subsumed into Telford where they were all in the iron and steel industry hence the move to Wishaw.

They intermarried with the Allford/Alford family and quite a few of them appear in North Lanarkshire censuses. Any by chance you are aware of. The George Steventon you mentioned was a son of the Shropshire born Richard Steventon.

Thanks again ;D

I think there are a couple of Allfords in the Cambusnethan records, do you want them, even if there is no obvious connection to the Steventons?

Hi Lodger

The only one I'm interested in is Levi Allford/Alford/Halford who is married first to Sarah Growcott(spellings differ) then to Harriet Steventon. I know Sarah dies sometime before 1901

Thanks

All I could come up with is this entry, it may or may not be the daughter of Levi & Harriet.

THOMAS W. DYAS. Castlehill View, aged 2 years.
Parents - George Dyas & Harriet Hallford.
Buried in common ground on 24th June 1908.

(I think "Castlehill View" should be Castlehill Feus).
Paterson, Torrance, Gilchrist - Hamilton Lanarkshire.
McCallum - Oban, McKechnie - Ross of Mull Argyll.

Liddell - Polmont,

Hi Lodger

Thanks for that . You are right Harriet is his daughter and there are other marriages between Dyas and Steventon. Another area to investigate :)

Hello, This is my first time on roots chat and i'd love to see the inscription for CRAIG & PATERSON if possible? I've just traced the Craig side of my family back to this area and think this could prove a great lead. Apologies for not sending you a PM, I need to do a few posts before it will allow me to  :) Many thanks
