Hello Hold and welcome to Rootschat.

Here are both pictures, I went over to the churchyard this morning to have a look at the stones, both are now much more worn. I'd take a guess and say that both Ingles/Inglis families are related as these stones are only separated by 2 others (in a churchyard of over 600 stones).

Here are the transcriptions, (transcribed in 1983) of both.

"Erected by James Ingles in memory of his father William who died July 1780 and is his intended burying place. Thomas Ingles died 17 November 1898 aged 74, his wife Mary Smith died 11th February 1874 aged 44 years, their eldest daughter Jane Hailstones died 5th August 1933 aged 71 years".

"Robert Inglis died 28th October 1853 aged 58 years. His 1st wife Janet Marshall died 13th March 1828 aged 24 years. His 2nd wife Margaret Brownlie died 20th September 1854 aged 52 years. Their daughter Margaret died 1st May 1833 aged 2  months. Also 2 children who died in infancy. Walter Inglis died 27th January 1829 aged 31 years".

There is another Inglis stone adjoining the one above, so it must be the same family -

"Erected by John Inglis in memory of his sister Grace who died 3rd July 1847 aged 18 years. His mother Margaret Hamilton died 17th August 1849 aged 4(?) years. His son Walter died 11th November 1881 aged 28 years. His wife Mary H Scott died 25th July 1898 aged 72 years. The above John Inglis died 21st March 1914 aged 87 years".
(This stone is completely broken).

If you this these stone definitely relate to you, let me know and I'll check the burial records for any other information there may be.

Many thanks Lodger, its much appreciated.

I'll have a look at my records next week (2 x Christmas parties to go to this weekend) and see if/how they tie in to my family tree.  Will let you know once I've completed that.

Many thanks and keep up the good work.

Lodger,

I have finally pieced together the info you sent me on the Thomson/Smith family.
I do have a question regarding Marion Smith (nee Thomson). You have her as the daughter of William Thomson and Betsy Reid. Which is correct. However, i do question the dates and ask if you can please confirm. You have her interred in No 74 on February 9, 1875 and that she passed away at the age of 52. That would mean she was born about 1823. The Marion that i have was born in 1832. I have found census information that confirms her marriage to William Smith and her children.  The census information is from 1841 right up to 1881. In 1881 she was living with William (husband) and Betsy R. who was 20 at the time. That corresponds to Betsy R. Smith death at the age of 21 in the year 1882. Marion can not have passed away in 1875 if she is on the census in 1881. If she did indeed live to the age of 52 then she would have passed away in 1884 and not 1875. The census in 1881 lists her at the age of 48 which makes sense if she passed away in 1884 at the age of 52...three years later.

Thomson & Gibb stone -

"Erected by John Thomson and Elizabeth Gibb in memory of their son William who died 27th July 1809 aged 14 years. John Thomson died 26th June 1816 aged 17 years. Elizabeth Thomson died 26th August 1845 aged 35 years. Elizabeth Gibb wife of John Thomson who died 12th November 1847 aged 81 years. John Thomson who died 8th October 1855 aged 84 years. David Thomson who died (?) July 1885 aged 84 years".

I also found another child of John and Elizabeth.

From the Day Book -
"Janet Ferguson, housewife, Wishaw. Aged 77 years, married.
Parents - John Thomson & Elizabeth Gibb.
Interred in the old churchyard on 17th December 1880".

From that entry I was able to find who she is buried with, there doesn't seem to be a headstone but there is some good information in the plot book entry -
(all dates are of interment)

Plot owned by James Ferguson & Janet Thomson.

In the South lair -
JAMES FERGUSON, aged 58 years. 22nd July 1895.
JANE F. FERGUSON, aged 68 years. 13th May 1911.
In the Centre lair -
JANET FERGUSON, aged 77 years. 17th December 1880.
JOHN FERGUSON, aged 82 years. 4th January 1884.
In the North lair -
ROBERT FERGUSON, aged 20 months. 13th September 1884.
LILY THOMSON, aged 22 months. 17th December 1888.
LILY THOMSON no age given. 26th September 1891.

And from the Day Book entry -
JANE F. FERGUSON, Wishaw. Aged 68 years, widow.
Parents - Thomas Smith & Jane Forrest.

Paterson, Torrance, Gilchrist - Hamilton Lanarkshire.
McCallum - Oban, McKechnie - Ross of Mull Argyll.
Scrim - Perthshire.
Liddell - Polmont,
Binnie - Muiravonside Stirlingshire.

Russell and Thomson stone. This is simply a marker stone with the date of erection. Parishioners were encouraged to "mark their spot" in the churchyard as there was no formal plan apart from the one in the gravedigger's head!
There is good (later) information in the Plot Book though. (Sadly the book only starts about 1876).

Plot owned by William Russell & Janet Thomson.

In the South lair -
(no first name) Brown. (no age) 6th February 1882.
William Thomson Russell, aged 75 years. 19th November 1912.

In the Centre lair -
Agnes K. Russell, aged 76 years. 16th July 1932.

In the North lair -
William Thomson Russell, aged 30 years. 13th November 1907.

2 of these are in the Day Book -

WILLIAM THOMSON RUSSELL, coal miner, Law (village) Carluke. Aged 30 years, married.
Parents - William Thomson Russell & Agnes King.
Interred in the old churchyard, 13th November 1907.

WILLIAM THOMSON RUSSELL, retired colliery oversman, Law (village). Aged 75 years, married.
Parents - William Thomson Russell & Janet Thomson.
Interred in the old churchyard, 19th November 1912.
Paterson, Torrance, Gilchrist - Hamilton Lanarkshire.
McCallum - Oban, McKechnie - Ross of Mull Argyll.
Scrim - Perthshire.
Liddell - Polmont,
Binnie - Muiravonside Stirlingshire.
Curran, McCafferty, Stevenson, McCue - Co Donegal
Gibbons, Weldon - Co Mayo.
Devlin - Co Tyrone.
Leonard - County Donegal & Glasgow.

Thomson, Clelland & Russell stone.

"Erected  by Alexander Thomson in memory of his father William Thomson who died 24th May 1854 aged 66 years. Also his mother Christ(in)a Clelland died 10th October 1863 aged 69 years. The above Alexander Thomson died 14th May 1888 aged 63 years. Margaret Russell wife of Alex(ander) Thomson  died 26th October 1900 aged 72 years".

The Plot Book doesn't have any more information, just the entries for Alexander & Margaret.

I found 1 entry in the Day Book -

ELIZABETH THOMSON, tambourer, Wishaw. Aged 34 years, unmarried.
Parents - William Thomson & Christina Cleland.
Interred in the old churchyard, 17th August 1871.

Paterson, Torrance, Gilchrist - Hamilton Lanarkshire.
McCallum - Oban, McKechnie - Ross of Mull Argyll.
Scrim - Perthshire.
Liddell - Polmont,
Binnie - Muiravonside Stirlingshire.
Curran, McCafferty, Stevenson, McCue - Co Donegal
Gibbons, Weldon - Co Mayo.
Devlin - Co Tyrone.
Leonard - County Donegal & Glasgow.

I seem to have lost the photograph of the Currie, Thomson & Thom stone but here is the transcription.

"William Currie died 29th February 1875 aged 68 years. His wife Elizabeth Thomson died 17th October 1878 aged 71 years. Elizabeth Currie died 3rd April 1848 aged 5 years. Isabella Currie died 20th June 1853 aged 11 months. Their son John died 19th March 1927 aged 92 years, his wife Jane Thom died 24th January 1923 aged 78 years and their son William died 27th November 1880 aged 6 years".

Only the last 3 are mentioned in the Plot Book but it seems to be a very large plot so there are probably quite a few people interred there.

From the Day Book -

WILLIAM CURRIE, clothier, Cambusnethan. Aged 68 years, married.
Parents - William Currie & Isabella Paterson.
Interred in the old churchyard, 29th February 1876.

ELIZABETH CURRIE, housewife, Cambusnethan. Aged 71 years, widower.
Parents - William Thomson & Elizabeth Shearer.
Interred in the old churchyard, 19th October 1878.

Could the following two be William's sister and mother? There is an anomaly with the father's name, William/John but you could check that out.

ISABELLA CURRIE, housewife, Kirkmuirhill, Lesmahagow. Aged 87 years, widow.
Parents - Francis Paterson & Elizabeth Ure.
Interred in the old churchyard, 11th January 1870.

ELIZABETH McINTOSH, housewife, Lesmahagow. Aged 69 years, married.
Parents - John Currie & Isabella Paterson.
Interred in the old churchyard 26th August 1878.
Paterson, Torrance, Gilchrist - Hamilton Lanarkshire.
McCallum - Oban, McKechnie - Ross of Mull Argyll.
Scrim - Perthshire.
Liddell - Polmont,
Binnie - Muiravonside Stirlingshire.
Curran, McCafferty, Stevenson, McCue - Co Donegal
Gibbons, Weldon - Co Mayo.
Devlin - Co Tyrone.
Leonard - County Donegal & Glasgow.
