Hello Lodger,

Do any of the gravestones have names Richard Marshall or Susan Marshall (nee Burns) on them? I am also interested in the transcription on the McAlpine & French gravestone.

Thank you.

I can't find any reference to Richard & Susan in any of the Cambusnethan records I have, only a Richard Marshall who died unmarried in Cleland aged 28 in 1877.
The McAlpine stone should be easy enough for you to read but if not, just ask. The owners of that plot (in Victorian times) were "John & P. McAlpine & E. French".  There doesn't seem to be any interments in that plot after that, certainly none after about 1880 when written records appear.
Do you have a French & Lorimer link?

Just looking at the picture of the stone, Elizabeth French died 29th October 1853 aged 44 years.

Curran, McCafferty, Stevenson, McCue - Co Donegal
Gibbons, Weldon - Co Mayo.
Devlin - Co Tyrone.
Leonard - County Donegal & Glasgow.

Thank you, Lodger. Looking at the Lorimer stone if she died in 1840 then she is not the Elizabeth I am looking for as she was alive in 1841. Do you think the date on the stone could be 1850?

I think it's 1840. It was originally transcribed as 1830 but I changed it sometime afterwards to 1840 but, it wont be the first gravestone to have been wrongly worded or dated. Elizabeth's details may have been added at the time of John's interment, the script looks slightly smaller than the the earlier stuff.

Thanks, Lodger. As you point out the date may have been added wrongly by the engraver.

Hi,
I am looking for a headstone for George Bell (12 Dec 1870-31 Mar 1871) in Cambusnethan Cemetery and any relatives who may be buried with/near him.  His parents were George Bell (16 Jun 1821 - 17 Apr 1891) and Jane Brown (4 Sep 1827 - sometime before 1900. I can't remember where I found the burial record for George but it says "GEORGE BELL, Overtown, aged 3 months. Parents - George Bell and Jane Brown. Interred in Common Ground, 1st April 1871."  Thank you in advance!

Hello bkk125,

Welcome to Rootschat.  Unfortunately, little George was interred in common ground, this means he was put into a pauper's grave and headstones were not allowed to be erected at such graves. As far as I can see, there are about 9 babies, (about 5 were stillbirths) and one adult in the same grave, all unrelated from what I can tell and all of them buried there within the space of 2 weeks.

I've had a look through the burial records and can't see any other children of George and Jane. I've also searched for George who died 17th April 1891, he is not in a private lair and the records of paupers burials for 1891 have not survived. Same with Jane I'm afraid.
Good luck with your research.

Lodger.
