Hi Annie, it's a very small stone with a simple inscription and no dates I'm afraid.

"Erected by Mary Barman in memory of her husband James Cullan".
The plot records (which only began about 1875 - 77) record the owner as "Mary Burman". Interred in the plot are Isabella Waddell aged 50 years, buried 28th January 1903. Also 3 Waddell children at various dates. Plus Janet Simpson aged 79 years, buried 20th June 1906.

Searched all the records and no other Barman/Burman mentioned and only a handful of Cullen/Cullans.

Paterson, Torrance, Gilchrist - Hamilton Lanarkshire.
McCallum - Oban, McKechnie - Ross of Mull Argyll.
Scrim - Perthshire.
Liddell - Polmont,
Binnie - Muiravonside Stirlingshire.
Curran, McCafferty, Stevenson, McCue - Co Donegal
Gibbons, Weldon - Co Mayo.
Devlin - Co Tyrone.
Leonard - County Donegal & Glasgow.

Hi Lodger
Would you please mind to see if your Gold & Morton MI relates to any of the following family please.
I have an Elizabeth Forrest who married William GOLD in 1877 at Dalserf. Her death certificate was strange as it was the first time I had seen her mentioned as Elizabeth MORTON GOLD who died 4th April 1916, Dalserf.
It was from this that gave me the clue to her Grandparents names, who did marry and have all children in Cambusnethan. Alexander FORREST m Elisabeth MORTON 14 May 1814.
They had the following children: All in Cambusnethan (now I have a chance to follow up on them)
Janet Forrest 16 April 1815
Jean Forrest 19 May 1816
Marrion Inglis Forrest 20 April 1817
Alexander Forrest 27 Sept 1818
Jean Forrest 24 Oct 1819
Isobel Forrest 11 March 1821
John Forrest 18 May 1823
David Leighton Forrest 19 Sept 1824

As I have only found these last night I have lots of work to do as of yet, but wondered if the MORTON and GOLD did relate in anyway.
Also thought if others see these names they may have connections.
Thanks again for your time to look at your records, appreciated.
Regards Ailsa

Hi Lodger,
I was wondering if you could possibly help me too. I am looking for any Aitkens, in particular Charles and Lockhart Aitken/Lothian.
Thank you in advance

Hi Ailsa,

I can't match any of the Cambusnethan records to these families, sorry. The Gold/Morton family have 3 generation of Andrew Gold, a link to Carluke but this is not the family you are looking for. There are plenty of forests (and Forrester's) but I would need the names of spouses to find any of the children you listed.
Keep hunting!

Hello Middlesbrough,

I found one definite burial for this family, not in the old Churchyard or cemetery but in the ancient (pre-Reformation) ground at Kirkhill. This was mostly used later on (after the "new" church was built a couple of miles away about 1650) by farmers and estate workers with very long links to the parish. It is quite out of the way and difficult to reach and the last interment would probably have been September 1955.

This is the one I found -

THOMAS AITKEN, labourer, Wishaw, aged 52 years, unmarried.
Parents - Charles Aitken & Lockhart Lothian.
Interred in the Clyde burial ground on 27th October 1866.

There are a few Lothians, some in Kirkhill (the Clyde as it's called in these records) and some in the old churchyard at Cambusnethan village. The related names are Lang, Wilkie, Dalziel, Brownlee, Davidson and Ferguson. If you want the details let me know. I have a few pictures of the Lothian plot at Kirkhill if you want them. There is still a joiners firm in Wishaw called Lothian, I see their van going around, William Lothian, joiner was buried at Kirkhill 20th September 1861.

Lastly, one of the very last entries on the list of burials for Kirkhill (and it's a short list of names & dates, no parents) is -
AGNES AITKEN, aged 62 years, interred 30th March 1955.

Hope this helps,
Lodger

Thank you so much for that. Charles Aitken was a gardener but I have no idea when he or his wife Lockhart died. I had no idea that Thomas died then either. I think Lockhart was the daughter of William but I can't be certain of that either.

Cheers

A gardener would make sense and, it was the family Lockhart of the Lee who had the estate of Cambusnethan House, so perhaps Charles was a gardener there. Perhaps his wife Lockhart was named after the titled family, which would make her a child whose father must also have worked on the estate. A lot of "ifs" I know.
The Lockharts were a very prominent family, one of them was the father-in-law of Sir Walter Scott (and his biographer).
Do you need the Lothian information?

I would love the Lothian/Lowden records. Charles and Lockhart were married in Cambusnethan but he was born in Abercorn, West Lothian. There are so many Lothian/Lowden/Louden's. It makes it very difficult.

Many thanks Lodger
I most likely will get back to you when I have done more research regarding the Forrest family now located, but I need some time to work out spouses and areas, and children of them.
Again thanks for the look, it was worth the ask even if not the right location for the GOLD family that married into FORREST

kind regards
Ailsa
