Looking for Ann Evans born 1820-22 Ringmer sussex
aged 39 on 1861 with two children under 10 but listed as widow so no husbands name...Really grateful

I've found your correspondence from a while ago. Have you any more information on this family? I am looking for a Henry Evans, b Brighton about 1850, his mother Ann nee HOLE, his father died when he was young - does this fit?  The Henry EVANS left home at a young age and ended up in NZ

I have quite a bit of info but not about Henry.

1851 census I think shows husband as CONVICT not courier
1861 if the person I have is correct Henrys mum has two younger children and these are the two I am interested in...My only tie up with the 2 census is the birth date of Ann and the birth place Ringmer..also the family names got carried on ...but by 1861 Henry is not on census at this address..

My grandmother..daughter of Agnes...grandaughter of Ann did say she had relatives in New Zealand..but doesn't nearly everybody?

My brick wall is Agnes I cannot find a marriage or a death...

Let me know if you find more about Ann...I do not know her parentage you say nee Hole  where do you get this please?

I had a look at the census record and saw that Ann was a Pauper as 'husband a convict'.
Henry Evans is my 'brick wall', so Im trying any and every lead I can think of. The name 'Hole' Im not sure where this came from - ancient family story perhaps, I will try to find out. The only definite of my Henry is 1877 in Reefton, NZ where he married age 27, from then on everything is documented.

The story was told that Henry was from Brighton, his father 'died' and his mother 'remarried', he didnt get on with his step father and was sent to some sort of Naval training est/school (could account for not on 1861 census). He went to sea at young age. Also that mother had to change only one letter of her surname when married. There are photos of his mother and two girls - sisters? what are the two children in 1861? Do you know the father's name?

I had a random message a while ago from a member of this board Jackie Bush it said that she was researching this evans fam and did I know if James came back from Tasmania? since then I have found an Ann Oliver who married a James 1840 and a James in Lewes prison 1851 but if this is the husband of Ann who may have ended up in Tas I dont know...i do wonder if the word convict would have been used for a prison inmate....1861 census says Ann Evans Widow did she marry an Evans after an Evens and was it this husband who died I dont know ....I tried to contact the board member who wrote she gave me her e.m.add. but no reply.  The lady who wrote the post was researching Louisa, Henrys sister and certainly knew more than me I will e.mail again and let you know if I hear anything

The Ann EVANS in Green Walk, Lewes, in 1851 whose husband was a convict was the wife of James EVANS, baptised at Ringmer on 15 Oct 1820, a son of Robert & Elizabeth, and transported in 1843. She had a sister-in-law whose husband had been transported for a separate offence living nearby. The 4 Nov 1848 Sussex Agricultural Express reports her being convicted by Lewes magistrates of assaulting a neighbour who had taunted them about their husbands. The reporter played the case for laughs.

Robert EVANS (1784-1870) & his wife Elizabeth (c.1788-1873) had 8 sons baptised 1806-1824 and then two daughters in 1826 & 1829. The 5th & 6th sons were both transported in 1841, so it was quite a family tradition. Son no.3, John EVANS, was also on the run in 1841 (theft of a donkey) and had he been captured transportation was the least punishment he could have faced. He wasn't - the 1851 census finds him camped by the wayside with his family in Ashdown Forest. Large and interesting family. Son no.4 had various convictions for poaching and assault, but survived to 1881 and has a nice memorial in Ringmer churchyard. Son no.2 died as a baby, while sons nos.1 & 8 do not appear to have troubled the authorities other than by their poverty and fertility. Interestingly the father of this brood was for many years the headborough (petty constable) of Ashton borough, Ringmer.

James was son no.7. His first conviction (Sussex Agricultural Express 30 Sep 1837) was for malicious damage to a duck, and resulted in a fine. His next conviction (SAE 30 Dec 1837 & 6 Jan 1838) was for theft of rabbits from a village shoemaker, and resulted in 6 weeks' hard labour. The shoemaker's son, who tracked him across the fields to his home by his footprints and recovered the rabbits, was also later transported. Jameswas finally transported (three strikes and you were out) from the Adjourned Michaelmas Quarter Session in 1843.

What a family never a dull moment this family tree research...I almost wish I was descended from these Evans rogues....My family research has me descended from Ann after James was deported...1851 has her at Lewes with Louisa aged 11 Caroline aged 9 Henry aged 7....1861 in Brighton with Agnes aged 7
My g/grandmother and Lewis aged 5....who their father was I do not know...She is said to be a widow then...There is nothing to say that these two children even had the same father...better to say you are a widow than a convicts wife ...Must look at name Hole that I did not know ...will  see what I come up with...many thanks
