James Robertson of Hawes St, Newcastle
« on: Saturday 25 June 11 15:38 BST (UK) »
Hi  :)

My Hubby`s G Grandad worked as an Ordnance Machine Man at the Elswick works in 1911.  Here`s my posting so far....

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,540678.0.html

I thought the key to unlocking this was to be found in Edinburgh, but I`m not getting far, so I thought I`d try looking at the Newcastle end of things.  Any help or pointers would be wonderful.

Thanks
Kindest regards
Tracey

Hi again  :)

What I have so far is that James Robertson was born in Edinburgh in about 1867/1868. On the 1911 census he was living in Elswick and working  as an Ordnance Machine Man at the Elswick works.  He was living in a boarding house with his daughter Isabella Grace (born 1904, Newcastle) but no wife or other children.
He states that he is married and has been for 14 years (1896/1897) and that there have been 8 children born from the marriage but that only 4 are still alive.

My Mother-in law remembers that her Mothers siblings were called George (1902), Robert (1906) and William (1908) who I think I have found in various Catholic homes and institutions around the area, but remembers her Mother saying that the boys were put into homes as their Mother was in a `nursing home`  and that Isabella Grace didn`t even know her own birthdate.  Robert was run over and killed on Scotswood Rd while he was a child and I have been looking for newspaper articles for that.  I don`t think they were ever together again as a family.
Can anyone think of where I could look now? Sorry if it`s all a bit of a muddle - like my brain at the minute  :P

Thanks for taking the time to read my post

Regards
Tracey

Hi Tracey,
You mention Catholic children's homes, if the family were Catholic the Parish Church for the area including Hawes Street, Elswick is St Mary and the Parish Registers are still in the church. Newcastle Central Library has a good local studies section including old newspapers. I'm not too sure about on-line arrangements but you could always try and get in touch with someone from there who might be able to help you. If I get the chance to go myself I'll ask about any reports of any accidents on Scotswood rd. I've been trying to get back to the church to review the registers but something always comes up so If I can I'll check for anything there for you but I can't promise, but if I can I will. Good luck

Thanks for the info Sherella, and also for your kind offer  ;D

I`ve been batting my head against this particular brick wall for the last few months.  I`ll be back in Newcastle over Christmas....when the libraries will be shut  ::)

I thought I might order a birth cert for what I hope is one of the brothers of Isabella Grace,  but then realised that it wouldn`t tell me anything that I didn`t already know. I also keep looking for the death reg of Robert (Robin) but with such a popular surname as Robertson.....

I just wish I could find a marriage for Isabella Grace`s parents -  James Robertson and Isabella Murray.

Thanks again
Kindest regards

Thanks Radcliff,

I`ll try to find this family on the 1911 and then if they are still in Seaton Delaval I know it`s not the right Robertsons.

If there were 8 children born to my James and Isabella, and only 4 of them surviving, maybe I should look for deaths of the children.

Anything is worth a shot  :P
