Pulburough look up
« on: Thursday 23 June 11 08:18 BST (UK) »
Hi All,
I am trying to find a marriage between an Alice Overington and the father of her son Henry Standen. I believe Alice was from Pulburough. As a widower she subsequently married John Goodger in Coates 1821. I would like any references to Alice or Henry's birth, her marriage to Standen or his death. Thanks for you help!
best
Kate

Henry Standen was baptised in Pulborough 1 Oct 1815, apparently son of George and Allen ? Standen.  George was recorded as a bargeman.

I have found a marriage record between a Richard Standing and Alice Overton in Wisborough Green 25 Jul 1810, both recorded as of the parish.  I can't find a marriage for a George Standing/Standen.

A Richard Standen bargeman of Arundel was buried aged 27 in Fittleworth on 21 Sep 1819.  Alice was recorded as a widow of Fittleworth on her marriage in 1821.

I think I would try to check the original records to see if some names have been poorly written, leading to confusion.

Nell

Thanks Nell, this is fantastic help. Both George and Richard are definite possibilities and both continue as family names. Thank you for your time and helpful lead!

Found this post when searching for Goodger / Goodyer in Sussex around Bury, Coldwaltham and Coates.
It looks like John Goodger died in 1840 and his widow Alice married James Sheppard on 8 Sep 1841 in Coates cum Burton. On 1851 census James Sheppard 43 b Coldwaltham, wife Alice 52 b Wisborough Green and son in Law Richard Standing 32 b Fittleworth are living at Coates. As the s-i-l is unmarried this looks like the term is being used for stepson. James is a gardener, Richard is a pauper receiving parish relief.
If Alice's first marriage was in 1810, looks like she might have knocked a few years off her age if the same one in Coates.
Can't find Alice in 1841, although I would expect her to be in Coates as it was only a few months before she married again.

Now found Alice Goodger in 1841, written as Alles - she is a female servant in same household as James Sheppard (male servant)

Hi Lizzie,
Your research definitely concurs with mine. I have never seen the 1851 census info though. Where do I find that online? I wish I had more info on the Goodger/Goodyear family to share with you. My ancestor is John Goodger's wife Alice. Would love to try find a copy of that 1851 census. Can you help me with that?
Many thanks
Kate

I found the census on FindMyPast. Alice was Alice Sheppard by 1851.
The reference is:  Piece number 1653, Folio number 6, Page number  5.

On FindMyPast it indicates whether you've viewed a record before and when I looked for this one yesterday, I was surprised to see I'd already viewed it, I think because of the Sheppard connection. A William Goodyer/ Goodger had an illegitemate child with a Jane Sheppard in Bury a few miles from Coates. The best candidate for this William is my 3 x great grandfather. The John Goodyer that Alice married was baptised in Coates 10 Sep 1782 parents Richard Goodger and Elizabeth.

Baptism in Coldwaltham of a William Standen on 26 May 1811, parents Richard and Alice. Reasonable time after marriage for first child, so could be same family.

And a baptism of a Jane Standen in Fittleworth on 2 Nov 1817, parents Richard and Alice.
