Bowmans in York
« on: Wednesday 22 June 11 20:53 BST (UK) »
My GG Grandfather was called Henry Bowman, b. Murton c.1823 and married to Frances/Fanny.

I have found a Henry Bowman on the LDS web site, christened on 20th Oct 1822 in Osbaldwick, of which Murton is part of the parish.  His parents were called George Bowman and Mary and they can be found in the 1841 census, still living in Murton.

Also on the LDS site are siblings:
Sarah, c. 1813 born in Murton
John c. 1815 born in Murton
Ellen c. 1817 born in Grimston (within a mile or two of Murton)
George c. 1818 born in Murton
Joseph c. 1819 born in Grimstone.
All were christened in Osbaldwick.

It seems likey that their parents were George Bowman and Mary Dixon.  These two individuals were married in Osbaldwick on the 30th June 1807.  George was born in North Stainley about 1781 and Mary was born about the same year.

It also appears possible/likely that they also had earlier children:
Ann b. 4/1/1808 c. 31/1/1808 in St. Cuthberts, York
Mary, b.1810 in Grimston - she married a Thomas Perkins in London
William b. 1811 in Dunnington
The connections here are more tenuous and basically rely on the locality , dates of birth and parents names

Looking for the marriage of Henry and Frances/Fanny reveals only one good fit.  That between Henry Bowman and Frances Kettlewell in 1846.  Interestingly their abode is given as Barker Hill in York where there is another family of Bowmans.  They don't appear to be directly related but it does seem a bit of a coincidence.

I guess that I am a bit concerned that I have put 2 + 2 and got 5 although there is some additional evidence from the probate caledar that reinforce ties between some of Henry's siblings.

Alec,

The Barker Hill Bowmans appear in my tree and I agree that there does not seem to be any obvious connection with your family.

The furthest I have got back with my line is to a William Bowman who was born in Huntington in 1735 so no known link to North Stainley.

All the best,

Pinetree
