Hunslet Parish records
« on: Wednesday 22 June 11 20:21 BST (UK) »
Does anyone have access to the Thoresby Society transcript of the Leeds Chapelries (Vol 4) for Hunslet 1764 to 1812 please? If so, I am looking for births and deaths of children registered to William and/or Elizabeth BLEASBY (married 1803) between 1803- 1813. I am also looking for a burial record for Elizabeth Bleasby (b 1786) after 1808.

Can anyone help please?

If you have access to Ancestry the WRY PRs are all on there now, as of a few days ago

These are available on the Library edition as well.

Hi there

Finding it hard to find a death at the mo for Elizabeth but I did find a few things for you.  Dont know if you have this info?

William Bleasby married Elizabeth Gill on 4th September 1803
by Banns              occp Carpenter.
Elizabeth signed with a X and William signed his name
witnesses were Henry Jennings  X     and Thomas Atkinson.
Lovely to see the original certificate in the book.

There are two Willim Bleasbys born in Leeds around the same time
but with the use of St Peters Church for the marriage and a christening
I think this is him

William Bleasby born 19th August 1788 and chris 26th October 1788
at St Peters Church,  parent Joseph, doesnt give the Mother.

I think these are Williams borthers and sisters
Catherine  1790
Harriet  b 1792
Richard     1793
John          1794
Richard      1796

There is a Mary born 1809 father Joseph but
dont know whether it is Williams sister.

Could only find one birth of a child for William and Elizabeth which
was Martha Bleasby born 5th February 1809 chrs 19th March 1809
at St Peters, father William.
There is alot of information to look through as the St Peters records are
very lovingly now on line which is very helpful and thank you St Peters
for that as half of my family were also christened and married there.

Hope this gets your started

Thank you so much for your help. I didn't know there was a second Wm Bleasby born in Leeds in the 1780s. I have just discovered the Hunslet and Leeds records online and they are solving a lot of riddles! So good to see them. I am now exploring further. The William I'm looking for was the son of James Bleasby not Joseph. Martha b 1808 was his daughter for sure but there is no mother listed on the record so I don't know who he married. There are two marriages of a Wm Bleasby - the one you found in 1803 and another in 1808 in Rothwell. I am leaning towards the second one (to a Mary Cudworth). THanks again for your kind help.

Regards - Virginia

Hi there

Had to laugh as if this William is not yours then its the second one I found.

William Bleasby chris 17th May 1865 at Whitkirk, which was a small village
in those days but it is now part of Leeds.
Parents are James Bleasby and Grace.

Still thought I had the correct wife in Elizabeth Gill but if you disagree ;-

otherwise there is another William  Bleasby who was married in Rothwell

William Bleasby married Mary Cudworth on 4th September 1808 in Rothwell?

as you mentioned    Take your pick lol.

The second marriage looks like the correct one from other information I have. For a start, whomever became Mrs Bleasby in 1803 or 1808 died because William remarried in 1814 and started a whole new family. I can find no death of an Eliz Bleasby (Gill) after 1808 but the other candidate (Mary Cudworth) died in Hunslet in 1812. This is why I think it's this marriage. Also Mary had a mother named Martha. However I am a bit mystified as to why William and Mary appear to have had just one child: Martha b 1808. I cannot find any births other than Martha Bleasby between 1803 and 1814. Is it possible they just haven't all been transcribed yet or are there some gaps? The family lived in Hunslet so they should appear under that Chapelry.

Thanks again.

Virginia

Hi Virginia

I find ancestry a mystery most times lol. We rely on scribes who did it as a job not for the love of tenderly writing down information we needed over a hundred years later. Even though they could read and write what age average did they have - laugh.

Well as far as I know West Yorkshire information has only just come on line lately so as you say there could be lots more to come.  I am interested for as you see my family mainly came from Leeds but the areas were Armley, Bramley, Pudsey, Holbeck, Hunslet, Kirkstall, Burley areas. Having been born
in Armley I know and can visulise the places I am looking at.  Saying that I have just searched for Mary Bleasbys death about 1812 and cannot find it anywhere.  It may be still in the registrars books. Sometimes in those days they didnt have to register deaths due to the fact most people were mourning a loved one and didnt want to.  So we might have to wait to find more information.  I came on ancestry searching 4 years ago, and I have found the information now so much more and fuller than before. Its alot better over the years. If they didnt have any more children it could have been that having Martha damaged her and she couldnt have any more.  She could have had a few still births etc. We dont have access to medical notes. If she died only 4 years after her wedding it could be that she was ill and never recovered from the birth of Martha.
Bless
