What became of Lavinia & Angelina Hassall?
« on: Wednesday 22 June 11 16:51 BST (UK) »
I'm tidying some sideways branches & can't trace these sisters

Lavinia Hassall reg'd at Leek, Staffs Q2 1854 (last seen 1871 census)
Angelina Hassall reg'd at Leek, Staffs Q4 1856 (last seen 1861 census)

They appear with their parents John Cotterill Hassall & Phoebe (sp varies) nee Goodwin and their younger sister Maria in the 1861 census at Rushton James, Staffs, with birthplace Rushton James (RG9/ 1948 47 11). They were baptised at St Lawrence, Rushton (from the village website) but I can't see either in the transcribed burials which run to 1869. I have traced both parents and Maria forward & don't need anything on them.

Lavinia is a servant in 1871 at Raven's Clough, Rushton Spencer (RG10/ 2884 37 10) as Levina Hassall.

What I've eliminated:

Marriages
Lavinia May Hassall 1905 Stoke on Trent to William James C Thompson – she is a 26 yo on the 1911 census
Lavinia Hassall 1926 Salford to Clarence M Trangmar. There's a death in 1994 of Lavinia Trangmar with date of birth in 1902.
Lavinia Piety Hassell 1890 Clutton to Ernest Obed Weeks. In 1891 she's a 27yo from Somerset

Deaths
Lavinia Hassall 1937 Salford age 64 ie birth c. 1873
Lavinia F Hassall 1941 Bedford age 82 ie birth c 1859
Ann Jane Hassall 1886 Leek age 25 – from 1881 is wife of William, and born Leek

Can anyone find anything after their last census appearances, please?

(Aside - I hadn't realised Angelina was a popular name in the 1850s until I started on this hunt - family history broadens my knowledge).

I had a look but  didn´t find anything so far.  Maybe you can search the later census using first name, age and staffs for birth place and try and investigate that way.  I tried it on the 1901 and there were a few possible matches.

Nice finding Heywood.
Wonder why they dropped the "Hassall"?

Thanks JustKia,
I think that's them - too much of a coincidence I hope. :)

We'll have to wait for mshrmh to consider and maybe give us an insight.
1851 has a John Cottrill and a John Hassall both born Heaton around the same time.
However John C has a mother Angel... so he looks most favourable.

regards

Thanks everyone for your ideas. You've certainly given me plenty to ponder - I'm going to look at what else I've got and what you've found and then come back - in the meantime thanks!

Right - I've had a look around & realise that the baptisms of the three sisters on the Rushton site should have made me suspicious - Lavinia has no surname & the register note has parents John Cotterill & Phoebe Hassall; Angelina Hassall is listed as daughter of John & Phoebe; Maria Cotterill daughter of John & Phoebe.

It very much looks like this John & Phoebe weren't married at that time, giving the surname variations - it looks very much as though you've found Angelina & Lavinia going forward, so many thanks for that.

I've now got to own up that as a result I've re-examined the marriage I'd got for a John & Phoebe and realise it was wrong - not my Phoebe (she's the connection, not John), so I've got a branch to "lop off" the tree.  :-[ Thanks everyone - it does show the value of more than one pair of eyes & is much appreciated!
