Shrewsbury Train Engine Driver GWR??
« on: Tuesday 21 June 11 16:43 BST (UK) »
Hello

I have an ancestor, Richard Ambler (1856-1949) who is recorded as being an Engine Driver in Shrewsbury.  I'd like to find out more about this but don't know the railway involved - would it be GWR?  If so, is it possible to find his employment details?
Many thanks
Emma

Hi,

Thanks for the reply - 1901 he seems to be an Engine Fireman, and 1911 Driver - I've just looked again and it says 'London North Western Railway' on the 1911 census so guess not GWR.  Sorry, not very clued up on railways!

Any help would be hugely appreciated
Emma

hi
I see him 1881 as an engine fireman and again in 1901 and 1911 as an engine driver.
Go to http://www.greatwestern.org.uk
I am just trying to locate your londonnorth western railway that could be  a GWR.
cheers cardiff :)

Hi, sorry to be thick but does the GWR website mention Richard Ambler (I've searched and can't find him) or are you looking at census returns?

thanks!

hi
London and North Western Railway is amn amalgamation of other railways 1846.
I believe you can find out info of railway info at the Public Office Ref is rail 410.
 this info has staff info
In the railway act of 1921 and 1923 saw the formation ofthe ''Big Four'' railway companies -great Western, London Midland and Scottish , London and North Eastern and Southern. These companies kept their identities until 1947 themn on january 1st 1948 they were nationalised and became Regions of the Britsh RailwaysHope this is of some use

He would undoubtedly been a member of the union - NUR or ASLEF. They were both subsumed into the RMT.

The RMT has excellent records, and I think that could be your first port of call.
