Packed Off To Wales

During the war my mum and her brother were packed off to Wales and stayed there until the war was over then returning to Enfield, Middlesex.
Where or how do I look for any info - I cannot give out any names because my mum is still with us - but she would love to get in touch with the family (if they are alive)? that looked after them.  If this is possible, then what information would I need ?

Whereabouts? If a small town, then the chances are that many people will not have moved from there and will remember the name.

You could put a notice in the local newspaper - indeed, it's a nice story and a local reporter might like to turn it into an article.

presumably she has the name & address of where she stayed

a phone book would be a good start - see if there is still people of that name in the village (assuming it wasnt something like Jones!)

or the electoral register

failing that - maybe a letter to the local newspaper might elicit response

Hi Tearose...

If your mum does not have an address, is there any chance your mum has still got her wartime 'National Identity Card'...

If so, the addresses where she lived would be on it.... I have mine and my mothers and they give the addresses  in Wales where we lived and moved to.

Also, if her brother, whom I presume has since died, was born before 1939, he would probably be on the  '1939 Register for England and Wales' which was a sort of mini census taken on the 29th September 1939....the data in this register formed the basis for the NHS central register when the NHS was founded.

The NHS hold this Register and will do a search....but only for individuals who are now deceased....and wait for it....a charge of £42...!
